This novel allows us to practice key reading skills such as analyzing characters, identifying themes, making inferences, and tracking how a plot develops over time. Students are also learning to support their thinking with evidence from the text, an important skill they will carry with them into middle school and beyond.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is interactive and student-centered. We read together as a class, in small groups, and independently, stopping often for discussion, journaling, and partner talk. Students enjoy predicting what will happen next, debating character motivations, and connecting the story's lessons about perseverance, justice, and friendship to their own lives. Having a book in every student's hands has made these discussions more meaningful and inclusive.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who were previously reluctant readers have especially connected with Holes. The mystery, humor, and suspense keep them excited to read each day, and many students are choosing to read ahead at home.
