It is a historical fiction novel based on the lives of Sylvia Mendez and Aki Munemitsu. Sylvia is the Sylvia of the Mendez v. Westminster School district case about school segregation, and Aki's family was forced to leave their home during the Japanese internment. This book is student-friendly but does not shy away from deep issues. \r\n\r\nLastly, the new copies of the Warriors book series is a fantastic addition to my classroom library. Sorting the buttons into the sorting trays has become a favorite activity. Sometimes they sort by color, sometimes they sort by shape, sometimes they turn the buttons into something else entirely. I've seen them become pirates' treasure, button families, food in a pretend restaurant, and jewels for a queen. \r\n\r\nI feel thankful every day when my students walk into the room, look at the baskets on each table, choose their loose parts for the day, and begin letting their creativity take over.
