The supplies made the activities feel different from a traditional science assignment, and students were eager to experiment, share their creations, and see what they could discover.\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue developing their nature journals as they make observations of plants, animals, and other organisms around our school and community. For students who are still building confidence in writing, something as simple as a bright pen can make the activity feel fun and motivating. With the headphones, I can have my students complete silent work involving video responses while I call up individual students for a speaking test. Having a variety of assessments is a research-supported strategy for making instruction accessible to all kinds of students in the classroom, so I have been wanting to figure out an effective way to test them orally without interrupting the flow of the class. However, giving the class material to read is less engaging than watching a video, so being able to have them watch a video without disrupting anyone's focus really improves the assessments I can give in class.\r\n Additionally, I have one student who is always out of his seat during class and occasionally plays music out loud, which is distracting to the class, but he has been asking for the headphones during independent work. This allows him to listen to music without having to disrupt anyone else, and therefore, it gives him access to the kind of focus he needs to succeed. In ways like this, the headphones are helpful even beyond individual testing, helping me to manage behaviors in class in a way that benefits everyone.
