As I shared in my initial project request, I wanted my students to have access to meaningful, high-interest literature that would challenge their thinking and spark authentic engagement — and this novel has done exactly that. Through our study, students have practiced advanced literacy skills like analyzing character motivation, identifying historical context, and connecting themes of family, courage, and social justice to their own lives. The emotional depth and historical grounding of the story have helped them build empathy and a deeper understanding of the Civil Rights Movement, while the humor and heart of the Watson family have kept them laughing, reflecting, and asking thoughtful questions.\r\n\r\nReading The Watsons Go to Birmingham — 1963 has become a shared experience that unites our classroom community. Every student has their own copy, which means we can annotate together, revisit key passages, and have meaningful, text-based discussions. During reading time, students are fully immersed — heads bent over their books, debating Byron's choices, or wondering how they might have acted in Kenny's place. The story's blend of historical realism and relatable family moments makes it the perfect text to stretch their comprehension and critical thinking skills while keeping their curiosity alive.\r\n\r\nOne of the most powerful outcomes has been watching reluctant readers light up with interest. Several students who once hesitated to read aloud now eagerly volunteer to voice different characters, and others have shared how much they relate to the Watson siblings' family dynamics. Thanks to this class set, my students are not only becoming stronger readers — they're discovering how literature can help them understand both the world and themselves.","fullyFundedDate":1757540557124,"projectUrl":"project/sixth-grade-novel-study-materials/9638686/","projectTitle":"Sixth Grade Novel Study Materials","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Clendenning","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7980204_orig.jpg?crop=480,480,x0,y60&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1736527654014","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7980204"},{"teacherId":7980204,"projectId":9038281,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, my students have experienced a level of excitement and engagement with reading that I've never seen before. The Hunger Games, along with our other class novels—Esperanza Rising and Fever 1793—have sparked a passion for learning in the classroom. Each book brings its own unique themes and challenges, and students are eagerly diving into their reading every day. The suspense and adventure of The Hunger Games have kept them on the edge of their seats, while Esperanza Rising has inspired deep discussions about resilience and hope, and Fever 1793 has opened up conversations about history, survival, and the human spirit.\r\n\r\nIt's been incredible to see students who were once hesitant to engage now actively participating, sharing insights, and connecting with the characters and their journeys. The enthusiasm in our classroom has grown exponentially, and I've witnessed a true shift in how my students approach reading—they're excited, motivated, and ready to explore even more. This transformation in their attitudes toward learning has been nothing short of amazing, and we have you to thank for making it possible.","fullyFundedDate":1736802409510,"projectUrl":"project/interesting-and-engaging-novel-study-mat/9038281/","projectTitle":"Interesting and Engaging Novel Study Materials","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Clendenning","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7980204_orig.jpg?crop=480,480,x0,y60&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1736527654014","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7980204"},{"teacherId":7980204,"projectId":8791183,"letterContent":"I am thrilled to share with you the incredible impact your generous donation has had on my 6th-grade students and our physical education program. Thanks to your support, our class now has access to much-needed PE equipment that has already transformed my students' experiences, engagement, and overall health and wellness.\r\n\r\nFrom the moment the new equipment arrived, the excitement in the room was palpable. The students' faces lit up when they saw the colorful balls, flag belts, and other equipment. It was as if a world of possibilities had opened up right before them! They immediately began brainstorming how they could use the equipment in creative ways, sparking teamwork and enthusiasm for physical activity.\r\n\r\nThe impact has been more than just physical; it's been emotional and social as well. The equipment has helped my students build confidence, develop teamwork skills, and foster a positive attitude toward fitness and health. It's clear that they are not only improving physically but also learning the value of perseverance and collaboration.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, our next steps include continuing to build on the foundation of movement and fitness we've established. In the coming weeks, we'll be incorporating some of the new equipment into group fitness challenges that promote both skill-building and a fun, supportive environment for all. The goal is to keep the momentum going, ensuring that every student feels confident in their abilities and excited to stay active.\r\n\r\nOnce again, thank you for your generosity. Your donation has had a lasting impact on our class, and we look forward to continuing this journey toward health, fitness, and teamwork.
