As I shared in my initial project request, I wanted my students to have access to meaningful, high-interest literature that would challenge their thinking and spark authentic engagement — and this novel has done exactly that. Through our study, students have practiced advanced literacy skills like analyzing character motivation, identifying historical context, and connecting themes of family, courage, and social justice to their own lives. The emotional depth and historical grounding of the story have helped them build empathy and a deeper understanding of the Civil Rights Movement, while the humor and heart of the Watson family have kept them laughing, reflecting, and asking thoughtful questions.\r\n\r\nReading The Watsons Go to Birmingham — 1963 has become a shared experience that unites our classroom community. Every student has their own copy, which means we can annotate together, revisit key passages, and have meaningful, text-based discussions.
