We have an independent reading program where students are asked to read a variety of books throughout the year, and this donation really ramped up the excitement for reading. Many might suspect that teens are not excited about reading when they have so many fun apps on their phones. Every year, I hear from multiple students requesting to spend more time reading in class or expressing how much they enjoy reading, even though they had never liked it before. Allowing students to choose their own book from a diverse selection of high-interest titles engages my students and ignites their passion.\r\nStudents in my class love discussing their books just as much as reading. With the remainder of our curriculum involving more intense skills and assessments, the independent reading program looks like a relaxing 10 minutes a day of simply reading, followed by a 5-minute discussion based on students' books. Students share insights with the entire class based on what they have read that day and how it affects their lives. This is where having diverse reading choices, where students can literally find a book similar to their own life engages their minds. My students have particularly enjoyed Colleen Hoover's books this year that deal with relationships. Many of my seniors are preparing for college or entering the workforce, and providing them with meaningful, engaging reading options helps build literacy skills, confidence, and a lifelong love of reading. Having access to new and contemporary books ensures that every student can find a story that resonates with their interests, culture, and experiences.\r\n\r\nThese books will also support our classroom focus on choice and voice in reading. Students will choose titles that speak to their goals and curiosity, allowing them to connect personally with literature while strengthening comprehension and analytical skills. In addition to reading for enjoyment, students will use these books in literature circles and discussions in both our ERWC and AP Literature classes.\r\n\r\nUltimately, these donated books will create an inviting, inclusive space where reading feels relevant and empowering. This has made a big difference—students don't have to worry about getting their period while on campus or missing class because they weren't prepared.\r\n\r\nWhen they first saw the supplies, they were so happy and relieved to know the school had their backs. It was really nice to see how much they appreciated something so simple but so important.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to make sure all our female students know these resources are available.
