We start with articles and graduate to longer form pieces. Students need interesting, diverse materials to interact with and having a plethora of books available about SO many different people and events in world history opens up doors and windows that students benefit from. These books, too, are written *for* them and include illustrations that some students need and others enjoy. They come up saying \"did you know [person] did this...?\" or \"did you know [group] weren't allowed to... until [year]?\" and we get to talk about it! It's awesome!\r\n\r\nIn my classroom we start by judging books by their covers. We get a feel for it, identify initial impressions based on cover art. We interact with the blurbs and small text. Then, we get to reading. When we're starting a book (whole class novel, book clubs, or individually) it's important that we assess the basics. We get into groups and students share out: where are we, when are we, who is the main character/person, who are the supporting characters/people, etc. I want students to feel comfortable talking about books while identifying the necessary early components.\r\n\r\nI appreciate your donation and what you've been able to provide, and the histories you've gotten to continue.","fullyFundedDate":1746786131381,"projectUrl":"project/developing-our-skills-with-informational/9280567/","projectTitle":"Developing Our Skills with Informational Text","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Rupiper","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9374522_orig.png?crop=1106,1106,x0,y29&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1713499301451","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9374522"},{"teacherId":9374522,"projectId":9238847,"letterContent":"What you have given us with \"The Giver!\" Students are *loving* the novel and are hooked into the iconic story. \"The Giver\" provides wonderful opportunities for discussion, collaboration, and introspection. My students have been so thoughtful in their conversations, and some are surprising me with their eagerness to read ahead. Our activities have ranged from posters defining community to Venn diagrams about our world vs. the world in the book to discussions on love and diversity to poetry readings that connect to story and all of it flowing in and out of beautiful partner, small group, and whole class conversation.\r\n\r\nThank you for what you have given these kids--access to literature, fantastic storytelling, and narrative enrichment.","fullyFundedDate":1744236219929,"projectUrl":"project/stops-along-our-literary-journey/9238847/","projectTitle":"Stops Along Our Literary Journey!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Rupiper","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9374522_orig.png?crop=1106,1106,x0,y29&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1713499301451","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9374522"},{"teacherId":9374522,"projectId":9279260,"letterContent":"There's nothing better than the buzz of a classroom after a new schoolyard sport experience! All of the goodies arrived before our first day of school and I was able to setup a snack area where students could go--free of questioning. Those first two weeks with snacks available were important for establishing trust early on with some of my students, and I felt the benefits were positive enough that this should be how I start off every year! I'd watch as students thoughtfully perused their options, pulled them out, and experienced some comfort having a snack without strings attached. They were able to focus on their learning knowing their stomach would be taken care of. This project has benefited and nourished the youth in my classroom, and I cannot express my gratitude enough.\r\n\r\nOn that note...","fullyFundedDate":1746785570451,"projectUrl":"project/its-snack-tastic/9106388/","projectTitle":"It's Snack-Tastic!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Rupiper","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9374522_orig.png?crop=1106,1106,x0,y29&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1713499301451","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9374522"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_124446","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":76,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":8,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":67,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":85.7,"schoolId":124446,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Isana Nascent Academy - 42nd St. Campus on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Isana Nascent Academy - 42nd St. Campus","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/los-angeles-unified-school-district/isana-nascent-academy-42nd-st-campus/124446"}
