When we first got the materials, many of my students were wary of the new art supplies. Most had never used or seen gouache before and had never even known the meaning of the letters and symbols on sketching pencils. So I gave my kids the opportunity to test out their new materials in a light-hearted activity by challenging them to use their materials in creating art on non-traditional surfaces: pumpkins. Kids drew their favorite movie characters, painted the pumpkins into houses, and some brushed on colorful Jack-o-lanterns.\r\n\r\nMore comfortable now, we moved on to their two projects. Most, if not all, of my students are struggling in school because of mental health, work, and a variety of personal situations, but their art pieces showed us and themselves that they think of themselves as more than the difficulties they face. Many took quite a while on developing their \"Who I Am\" art pieces and came to me with questions like \"What should I put? What defines me?\" Often times, I'm told that they don't know what makes them who they are. But finally, a few weeks later, we find out that some students defined themselves by the music they listened to, some by the places they used to live, some by the people they love, and some by their favorite makeup and clothes. Thanks to you, my students were able to visualize how they were more than their daily struggles: the little things they do and like are also a big part in making them who they are today. \r\n\r\nTo my surprise, my students were much quicker to take on their \"Who I Want To Be\" project. They drew themselves in their future jobs along with any changes they've made to themselves ten years from now. I have students who want to work in nursing, business, music, mechanics, sports, and so many more. It reminded my students why it's so important to keep on working on who they are now and to keep on pushing through. And most importantly, in the artworks of their future, each and every one of them are happy. That happiness is the future they are fighting for.\r\n\r\nI cannot thank you enough for supporting my students in discovering who they are and who want to be by donating brushes, sketching pencils, color pencils, pens, stumps, containers, and paints! None of these would have been possible without you. \r\n\r\nI wish you the loveliest and merriest of the new year!","fullyFundedDate":1727702212521,"projectUrl":"project/let-kids-imagine-a-future-worth-fightin/8835954/","projectTitle":"Let Kids Imagine: A Future Worth Fighting For","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Narsico","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9782781_orig.png?crop=751,752,x0,y15&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1727546405744","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9782781"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_7203","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":51,"numTeachers":3,"percentFrplEligible":88,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":25,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":70,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"17.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":100.0,"schoolId":7203,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Cheviot Hills Continuation Senior High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Cheviot Hills Continuation Senior High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/los-angeles-unified-school-district/cheviot-hills-cont-senior-high-school/7203"}
