With the new sensory play materials, my TK students are engaging in meaningful, developmentally appropriate learning every single day.\r\n\r\nWe've been using the sand, rice, and kinetic sand as part of our sensory exploration centers. Additionally, students practice early writing skills by tracing letters and numbers using their fingers or tools. The letter and number stamps have become a favorite during small group instruction—students love stamping out their names or creating simple number patterns, all while building early literacy and math skills in a fun, tactile way. The pom-poms and fine motor tools like tweezers have been especially impactful, helping strengthen little hands and fingers as students sort, count, and transfer materials—skills that are essential for writing readiness.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the excitement was absolutely contagious. Students' eyes lit up as they explored each new item, eager to touch, sort, scoop, and create. For many of them, these sensory experiences provide not only joy, but also a calming and focusing effect that helps them stay engaged and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nOne especially memorable moment was watching a small group of students work together to \"build\" letters in the sand using pom-poms and then stamp those same letters on paper. They were collaborating, problem-solving, and proudly sharing their work with one another—truly embodying the spirit of learning through play.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, we plan to continue integrating these materials into our literacy and math centers, while also expanding into more structured sensory-based projects. For example, students will begin creating simple stories using stamped letters and sensory bins as inspiration, and we'll incorporate counting, sorting, and patterning challenges using the pom-poms and tools.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, my students are not only learning foundational skills, but also developing confidence, independence, and a love of learning. Thank you for helping us bring exploration and joy into our classroom every day.","fullyFundedDate":1767113059248,"projectUrl":"project/exploration-through-sensory-play/9820514/","projectTitle":"Exploration Through Sensory Play!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Medina","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10309574"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_7311","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":365,"numTeachers":23,"percentFrplEligible":93,"percentAsian":32,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":60,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":72.2,"schoolId":7311,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Cahuenga Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Cahuenga Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/los-angeles-unified-school-district/cahuenga-elementary-school/7311"}
