I hoped that it would provide a safe space for students to come hang out and learn coping skills, but getting things up and running was a challenge. After only one \"open door\" day, the news spread and kids rush to my room excitedly wanting to be the next to come in. When they visit for the first time, they look around in wonder, taking it all in and enjoying the atmosphere. If they come in just for some free time, they are often drawn to the fidget tools or art supplies. Those who come in because they are having a rough time are given a choice of different options to help. They might take some time in the quiet tent with a book or putty, or they might want to bounce on the balls or balance on the rocker board to get some energy out. Others want to grab a book and sit in silence, or create something out of clay. Many are very happy just to sit and color, or watch the stars on the ceiling. Some are drawn to the yoga mats or the breathing tools. Whatever their preferred method, the CARE Center has it. \r\n\r\nI host a lunch bunch at least once a week and students are able to come in and discuss how they handle difficult situations, or learn different skills to get through life. They can learn how to make friends, how to deal with stress, and how to make the world a better place. They get to learn from each other, and I often learn from them too. These kiddos may have experienced a lot in their lives, but it is clear that their experiences have given them great wisdom. \r\n\r\nBefore & after school, and during recess whenever possible, the CARE Center is open for drop-ins where students come in and hang out. They might come in just to chat, to get some clarity on a challenge in their lives, possibly even get homework help, or hang out with their peers. Their quiet giggles when they know they are in a safe space and can truly be themselves make \"work\" such a joy. \r\n\r\nYour contributions to this Center have helped so many students already this year. Many have learned new skills and ways to handle stress, conversation starters, and different ways to navigate conflict. Others have just entered an awesome room and have had the chance to know what it feels like to be welcomed and seen. All have gotten to feel the joy of knowing that someone has taken the time contribute to their development because they are worthy young people.
