In a community where 90% of students are Persons of Color and 75% qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch, having access to literature that resonates with their lived experiences is invaluable.\r\n\r\nIn our AP English classroom, reading is not just about analyzing texts—it's about engagement, discussion, and critical thinking. With Baldwin's novel, students have explored narrative voice, complex character studies, and themes of identity and oppression, developing the analytical skills essential for AP success and college readiness. More importantly, Baldwin's work has sparked passionate discussions about family, faith, and racial identity, giving students a platform to connect literature with their own lives.\r\n\r\nOne of my students, J, shared how meaningful it is to see himself reflected in the curriculum:\r\n\r\n\"As an African American student, I am especially excited to read this novel and engage with James Baldwin's powerful storytelling. Having access to literature that reflects diverse voices and experiences is incredibly meaningful, and your donation has made that possible for us.\"\r\n\r\nAnother student, A, beautifully summarized the importance of broadening our literary perspectives:\r\n\r\n\"The power of literature lies in transmitting different ideas, experiences, and perspectives across time and space. Listening to diverse voices with different outlooks on life is one of the best ways to do this, and James Baldwin is a good voice to add to that chorus.\"\r\n\r\nBefore this donation, these books simply weren't available to our students. L, another of my students, expressed their appreciation for this opportunity, recognizing how it expands their literary knowledge and prepares them for the AP exam:\r\n\r\n\"It helps us explore new genres and styles of writing, which can be useful for the AP Test. We enjoy reading and learning new things, which is what makes reading fun.\"\r\n\r\nThis project has not only provided books—it has provided access, representation, and inspiration. Your support has validated students' voices, given them a deeper understanding of literature's role in shaping society, and empowered them as critical thinkers and lifelong learners.\r\n\r\nFrom our classroom to you, thank you for making this possible.","fullyFundedDate":1728013848945,"projectUrl":"project/invest-in-literature-classroom-set-of-b/8686668/","projectTitle":"Invest in Literature: Classroom Set of Baldwin’s Classic Novel","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hillis","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3087301_orig.png?crop=480,480,x0,y81&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1724262192521","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mshillis"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_56088","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1880,"numTeachers":95,"percentFrplEligible":61,"percentAsian":24,"percentBlack":13,"percentWhite":9,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":43,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"19.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":72.7,"schoolId":56088,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Bear Creek High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Bear Creek High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/lodi-unified-school-district/bear-creek-high-school/56088"}
