They were curious about it. Everyday, they asked if we'd be reading the book that day (and we did). They wanted to discuss what they thought would happen next. Students who missed a day would ask questions, which gave everybody else a great opportunity to summarize and synthesize the information. It also gave us a nice respite from discussing gossip, because we could focus all of the 'drama' energy toward the characters in the novel. This launched us into larger societal conversations at times (e.g., George Floyd, etc.), but not towards others on campus. \r\n\r\nBasically, it gave my students the opportunity to practice all of the reading and critical thinking skills we want all people to practice and use... while using a book they could relate to, and therefore could more easily invest themselves. Reading became an intrinsically rewarding experience for an overwhelming majority of my students for at least a short period of time. I think it gave many of my students confidence to continue to read longer novels, and for some, it offered a nice relief from the technology-heavy load they were fed during and after the COVID distance learning experience. We all benefitted greatly from your generosity.","fullyFundedDate":1641935867238,"projectUrl":"project/all-american-boys-reading-about-all-amer/5921681/","projectTitle":"All American Boys Reading About All American Boys","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Walton","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8134869_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1747541190448","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8134869"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_95975","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2334,"numTeachers":75,"percentFrplEligible":63,"percentAsian":8,"percentBlack":7,"percentWhite":15,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":64,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"31.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":68.8,"schoolId":95975,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Independence High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Independence High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/kern-high-school-district/independence-high-school/95975"}
