Additionally, due to the fact that this story has a decent amount of Spanish interspersed throughout, my English Language Learners have received a boost of confidence as they get to be the experts with certain pronunciations and meaning-makings. I am thrilled to be able to integrate my student's prior knowledge and connections in order to help them really grasp the heart of this novel.\r\n\r\nIn the spring, we will be reading \"Out of My Mind,\" by Sharon M. Draper, and then watching the film adaptation so that students can compare a story to its multimedia version. Many of our readers had never encountered a dystopian novel before, and The Giver has helped them build the critical-thinking foundation they'll need for more complex texts in the future.\r\nReading in our classroom has become an engaging, collaborative experience. Students read independently, in small groups, and through structured read-alouds where we pause to annotate, ask questions, and make predictions. The room is often filled with the sound of students debating rules from the Community, discussing turning points in Jonas's journey, or sharing connections between the novel and their own lives. These books have allowed us to shift from simply completing assignments to having meaningful, student-led conversations.\r\nSeveral students who typically struggle with reading have become some of our most enthusiastic participants. One student who is usually quiet in class now raises their hand regularly to discuss the emotional impact of receiving memories. In just a short time, these books have become the most sought-after items in our classroom, with students eagerly signing up for their turn to read them. Being able to read engaging, contemporary stories in their native language while building connections to English has given them a newfound confidence and excitement about reading.\r\n\r\nThese graphic novels have become a bridge between languages and cultures in our classroom. Students who were previously hesitant to participate are now eagerly sharing their favorite parts of the stories with their classmates. Just yesterday, I overheard an animated discussion about Miles Morales between students who had never spoken to each other before. The bilingual reading options have created wonderful opportunities for peer learning, with students helping each other understand concepts in both languages. The diverse characters and storylines in books like \"Mexikid\" and \"Frizzy\" have helped our students see themselves represented in literature, which is invaluable for building their self-confidence and fostering a true love of reading.\r\n\r\nYour thoughtful gift has transformed our classroom into a more inclusive and welcoming space where every student can find stories that speak to them. The impact of these books extends far beyond the classroom walls – students are developing literacy skills in both languages while discovering the joy of reading.
