My students were immediately excited when they received their books and realized we would all be reading the same novel together. There was a strong sense of anticipation, especially as they learned the story connects to environmental issues and student activism. Many students quickly connected to the idea that young people can make a real difference in protecting the environment.\r\n\r\nAs we read, students engaged in close reading, discussion, and writing activities focused on character development, theme, and author's purpose. They analyzed how Carl Hiaasen builds conflict between characters and larger environmental concerns, and they frequently connected the novel to real-world issues they care about. One of the most engaging parts of the unit was our final project, where students chose an environmental issue they were passionate abou lt such as pollution, animal protection, deforestation, or water conservation and created flyers to raise awareness. One of my favorite student pieces was a \"Don't Waste Your Pencils\" poster, which encouraged classmates to be mindful of paper and resource use as a way to reduce tree waste and air pollution. It was a creative and thoughtful example of how deeply students connected the novel's message to their own lives.\r\n\r\n This helped students not only demonstrate their understanding of the novel's themes, but also see themselves as advocates for real-world change. Your donation made this meaningful, student-driven experience possible, and it helped bring the message of Hoot to life in a powerful way.","fullyFundedDate":1769031537887,"projectUrl":"project/hoot-a-lesson-on-people-and-the-planet/9979629/","projectTitle":"Hoot: a Lesson on People and the Planet","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Molloy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10058484_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1751315251718","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10058484"},{"teacherId":10058484,"projectId":9899766,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support in providing A Wrinkle in Time for my 7th grade classroom. My students were immediately intrigued by the novel's blend of science fiction, imagination, and deeper themes of courage, identity, and good versus evil. From the first chapters, they were drawn into Meg's journey and the unusual worlds she travels through, which sparked many thoughtful discussions and predictions.\r\n\r\nAs we read, students engaged in a variety of activities that helped them better understand the text, including close reading, structured discussions, and character analysis. The highlight of the unit was our final creative project, where students designed their own planet for a travel brochure inspired by the novel. They created detailed descriptions of their planet's environment, rules, inhabitants, and unique features, and then designed brochures to \"invite\" others to visit. When students first saw the materials and heard about the project, there was immediate excitement. many of them were eager to think creatively and go beyond the world of the book.\r\n\r\nThis project allowed students to demonstrate their understanding in a creative and meaningful way, while still grounding their work in themes from the novel such as bravery, individuality, and the power of love. Next, students will be sharing their brochures with the class and reflecting on how their invented worlds connect to Meg's journey. Many students said it felt like a \"hands-on museum experience,\" and they were eager to begin working with the clay right away.\r\n\r\nWe used the supplies to deepen our understanding of Imperial China, especially the importance of porcelain, craftsmanship, trade along the Silk Road, and cultural innovation during different dynasties. Students designed and sculpted their own bowls, carefully considering shape, style, and symbolism as they connected their creative choices to historical ideas.\r\n\r\nThis project was the highlight of my students year, and they raved about it to all of their friends! The story gave students a chance to connect with characters in meaningful ways while also strengthening their understanding of theme, character development, and text evidence.\r\n\r\nThroughout the unit, students participated in a variety of activities that helped bring the novel to life. We held structured discussions, completed writing responses, and worked on a final project that allowed them to creatively demonstrate their understanding of the story. Reading in our classroom was highly interactive. students shared ideas with partners, and made thoughtful connections between the text and their own lives. Many students who are usually hesitant readers were especially engaged and proud of their work during this unit.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, this book helped build confidence and excitement around reading. During our media unit, students created and hosted a media fair focused on topics they chose themselves. They made posters, small books, and displays to teach others about their topics and explain how media can influence people. One special moment was seeing students proudly stand by their projects and explain their ideas clearly and confidently to classmates.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were excited and eager to get started. Many said it felt like they were creating something \"real,\" not just completing an assignment. Students who don't always speak up in class found their voice through their projects and took pride in sharing their work.\r\n\r\nNow, students are building on those skills in our Shark Tank–style project, where innovation and invention are at the center of learning. Students are identifying real problems they see in their everyday lives and designing original products to solve them. They are thinking creatively, testing ideas, and making changes when something doesn't work the first time. Students are learning that innovation isn't about being perfect—it's about trying, improving, and explaining why their idea matters. Next, they will practice presenting their inventions, explaining how their product works, who it is for, and why it is needed.
