We hosted an on-campus wellness event for students that included presentations by NAMI and CORA on suicide prevention and digital safety, followed by a Flex Time event where students could practice various self-care activities and try different ways of taking care of themselves. The students expressed how important it was for them to carve out time at this point in the school year to connect, journal, paint, and pet a therapy dog and appreciated how our school continues to hold this day each year. At lunch, we had community organizations (Pride centers, Kapwa, StarVista, DCHYC, Allcove and more!) table to share their resources with students. This day was only possible with your support! The papers are eye-catching and beautiful and the students used them in creative ways. We recently finished reading Night by Elie Wiesel, a powerful telling of Wiesel's experiences during the Holocaust. Students engaged with this book on a profound level and the essays they wrote demonstrated a sophisticated understanding and analysis of ideas, motifs, and themes in the text. Part of the reason that they were able to do such deep thinking for their essays was the found poem activity that we did with lines from the text. Students identified lines from the text that they found meaningful and then worked in small groups to create found poems from these words. They used the papers from your donation to make these poems visually powerful. The poems and visuals were stunning! The photos are included here. The depth of thinking of teenagers never ceases to amaze me. Thank you again for your support of young people and the collaborative work that we are doing together in classrooms.","fullyFundedDate":1737485297843,"projectUrl":"project/paper-for-poems-and-projects/9049176/","projectTitle":"Paper for Poems and Projects","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Poehler","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9799032_orig.png?crop=258,258,x0,y26&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1736714038308","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9799032"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_4540","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":491,"numTeachers":33,"percentFrplEligible":20,"percentAsian":35,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":25,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":25,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"14.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":82.8,"schoolId":4540,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Oceana High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Oceana High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/jefferson-union-high-school-district/oceana-high-school/4540"}
