The first time they saw the materials, their reactions were filled with excitement and curiosity. Some of them instantly connected with the vibrant illustrations, while others were drawn to the positive messages about coping and acceptance. They were especially thrilled to see stories that reflected their own experiences and struggles.\r\n\r\nOne specific project we worked on was creating a \"Coping Skills Toolbox\" in which students read selected SEL books and then discussed different strategies they could use when they felt stressed or overwhelmed. They each picked a coping skill that resonated with them from the books and illustrated it in their own creative way, creating a visual representation for their toolbox. The results were beautiful and meaningful—each student's artwork reflected a personal connection to the coping strategies.\r\n\r\nAs for the next steps, we'll be diving deeper into role-playing exercises. After discussing various coping strategies, students will act out situations where they could apply what they've learned—whether it's breathing exercises, positive affirmations, or seeking support from others. This will help them internalize the lessons and practice real-world application. They'll also continue to share their reflections in a journal, tracking their emotional progress. I know the students are excited to continue this journey and see how the resources will help them grow in emotional regulation and self-awareness.\r\n\r\nThank you to all the donors for making this possible!","fullyFundedDate":1734099449032,"projectUrl":"project/books-to-read/8713709/","projectTitle":"Books to read","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Dunagan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9630316"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_34355","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":553,"numTeachers":22,"percentFrplEligible":59,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":7,"percentWhite":38,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":48,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"25.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":68.8,"schoolId":34355,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Helendale Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Helendale Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/helendale-school-district/helendale-elementary-school/34355"}
