To our class, these are not just book; they open doos for our students to connect with stories that mirror their own lives and ask them to be open to the wider world around them. Many of these stories offer our kids a chance to reflect on personal experience and explore complex emotions in a safe and age appropriate way. These books have sparked conversation about fairness, equality, and social issues, which help our students develop a deeper understanding of themselves and others. For example, the way our class has connected with the characters in Bridge to Terabithia, especially navigating difficult feeling like loss, have been quite powerful.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading doesn't just take one form. We begin our year reading in whole group, then we move to a small group setting for more focused learning, and eventually we begin partner reading to encourage discussion, fluency in reading aloud, and more independent reading. I am always consistent on checking on their comprehension and fluency to see how smoothly they are reading aloud. After lunch, students are also given the opportunity to independently read a book of their choosing or we do a whole group read aloud to relax. Along with these designated reading times, our weekly reading logs help them build good reading habit and reading stamina. it's a varied approach that is designed to make reading engaging and effective for everyone.\r\n\r\nIt's been particularly heartwarming to see how individual students have connected with specific stories and characters. Sometimes, the connections are unexpected but deeply meaningful. One student, who tragically and suddenly lost her older sister, found comfort and understanding in the way Jess Aarons in Bridge to Terabithia dealt with his grief over his best friend. Similarly, the story of friendship and support in Holes really resonated with many of our students. As many of our students are still building their reading skills, as many don't speak English as their primary language, the bond between Stanley and Zero really struck a chord. After reading about Stanley and Zero helping each other with things they each struggle with, I have seen more students offering support to friends and peers! Your kindess and generosity has done so much more than just put books in our hand; it's helping our students grow, understand, and connect with each other and the world in profound ways. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!","fullyFundedDate":1730733526446,"projectUrl":"project/ms-knoxs-novel-study-collection/8901143/","projectTitle":"Ms. Knox's Novel Study Collection","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Knox","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9814951"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_5126","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":94,"numTeachers":6,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":25,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":65,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":92.9,"schoolId":5126,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Geyserville Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Geyserville Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/geyserville-unified-school-district/geyserville-elementary-school/5126"}
