Having a specific, high-quality, and highly relevant book for every student has already made a powerful impact that we wanted to share with you.\r\n\r\nNew Kid is more than just a funny graphic novel; it's a profound tool for social-emotional learning, particularly for our middle school students. The book follows Jordan Banks as he navigates a new, academically challenging school where he often feels like an outsider.\r\n\r\nUsing a graphic novel allowed us to practice reading skills in a new way. Students learned to analyze how the artist uses panels, color, and speech bubbles to convey emotion and tone, which is a crucial skill in navigating the media they consume every day.\r\n\r\nWe observed students from different social groups realizing they shared similar anxieties about starting middle school, even if their backgrounds were different. The book helped them see that everyone carries feelings of being a \"new kid\" sometimes, significantly boosting classroom empathy and connection.\r\n\r\nThe most wonderful change has been seeing our reluctant readers dive headfirst into this text. Graphic novels often lower the barrier to entry for readers who feel intimidated by long blocks of text. We have seen a huge increase in reading engagement from students who typically avoid assigned reading. Because they had their own copy, they were eager to read ahead and discuss their favorite panels and plot points.\r\n\r\nThank you once again for providing this engaging and essential resource.","fullyFundedDate":1750256151319,"projectUrl":"project/navigating-middle-school/9250527/","projectTitle":"Navigating Middle School","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Campbell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1661168_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1472703700298","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1661168"},{"teacherId":1661168,"projectId":9551293,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your incredible generosity! The arrival of our new classroom texts has already created a buzz, and we are so grateful for your belief in the power of reading. Many of you are avid readers, and we wanted to share a peek inside our classroom to show you the difference these books are making.\r\n\r\nWith this influx of fresh, engaging books, reading has truly come to life! It's no longer a silent, individual task; it's an interactive, exciting part of our Friday.\r\nPreviously, choice was limited. Now, the sheer variety means every student can find a book that truly excites them. When students choose what they read, they own the learning, leading to deeper focus and longer reading stamina.\r\nThe impact on individual students has been immediate and heartwarming.\r\n\r\nYour generous gift has not only stocked our shelves but has fundamentally changed the way my students view themselves as readers. On behalf of the entire class, thank you for providing the tools we need to build a generation of thoughtful, critical, and joyful readers.","fullyFundedDate":1755722580849,"projectUrl":"project/first-chapter-friday/9551293/","projectTitle":"First Chapter Friday","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Campbell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1661168_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1472703700298","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1661168"},{"teacherId":632895,"projectId":9238041,"letterContent":"Thank you again for your generous and wonderful support of this grant. Because of you, my students last year were able to start reading this engaging novel that is witty and powerful, and filled with unexpected plot turns!\r\n\r\nI created a packet to be used with the novel that allowed students to explore the rich vocabulary throughout the book. The packet also allowed students to write down character quotes that they especially liked so we could use them as mentor sentences in our morning writing sessions.\r\n\r\nBecause the grant was at the end of the year, we were not able to finish the novel, but I assured my students they could borrow it this year to finish any time - and you can be sure that my upcoming class will enjoy reading it during the new school year.\r\n\r\nI truly believe well-written books allow children to develop their creativity, express themselves more effectively, become strong writers, and \"travel\" along with the characters experiencing and learning right along with the protagonist. YOU allowed that with your support of this novel. Sometimes the best life lessons are learned from a book, even if it's taught by a fictional character. With the start of the year needing to use painters tape to section off spots for students and also having to borrow carpet squares, my class as ready learned how valuable a classroom rug is. The amount of joy and excitement our new carpet gave my students is indescribable. Not only did it complete the classroom's aesthetic, but it allowed the blue rug to section out a space for the class library. My students shared that the new carpet made them more comfortable and at ease for our daily lessons. They also expressed the self satisfaction that they were getting less distracted then when they would half consciously peel the painter tap from the old rug. \r\n\r\n\r\nWhile the carpet has enhanced the safe environment in the classroom, I have also found it a great tool to get the students to practice the curriculum in different ways. During my small ELD group or during extra time to study for instance, spelling test, I will have them trace the words into the carpet to connect their oral spelling with the kinesthetic movements. This practice of using multiple senses help the students make stronger connections in their brain while studying. Through out each day I have been able to also use the carpet as a way to add math into the student's dismissals to recess and lunch. Students have to remember what a row is verses a column to understand when they are excused. Once we got to learning about arrays in our math lessons they constantly used and referred to our carpet.","fullyFundedDate":1725328212201,"projectUrl":"project/come-together-classroom-rug/8631496/","projectTitle":"Come Together, Classroom Rug","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. S","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9650362"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_3801","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":411,"numTeachers":24,"percentFrplEligible":30,"percentAsian":79,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":5,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":9,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"17.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":84.3,"schoolId":3801,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Hirsch Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Hirsch Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/fremont-unified-school-district/o-n-hirsch-elementary-school/3801"}
