On the first day of school, my bead station was already set up for the students. It's at the front of the room and I could already see wandering eyes look over to the many colors on display. While going over classwork expectations, I shared the details of how to earn the beads and the students' eyes lit up with excitement.\r\n\r\nThe students have already started to earn their beads of achievement. At the start, I was still finding a routine of how and when to check their percentages on their assignments and reading quizzes and then how and when to distribute the beads. They were already asking me when they could get them and working hard to earn them.\r\n\r\nI now check their scores for the week at the end of the day on Friday, and on Monday they get to select their beads. The curtains soften the light coming through the windows and block the visual noise of the hallway pods, creating an environment where those students can regulate more easily and stay present during instruction.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are building our small group reading routines, and having a calm, focused classroom environment is making that work so much smoother. As we continue through the year, students will use these materials during math centers, small groups, counting activities, and independent practice. The bins have also helped create a calmer, less cluttered classroom where students can stay focused and move around more easily. We now have more room for students to spread out, work with partners, and participate in small-group learning.\r\n\r\nThe rolling carts also make it so easy to bring materials exactly where we need them instead of having supplies take up permanent space around the classroom. My students have loved having a classroom that feels more open and gives them additional places to learn and work comfortably. Now, I don't allow technology to be used during indoor recess and the students have absolutely no issue with that.
