Your donation has made it possible for our students to access culturally relevant reading materials that broaden their understanding of history and give them opportunities to explore perspectives that are often missing from traditional textbooks.\r\n\r\nOne of the books your generosity helped bring into our classroom is Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States. Our students recently read Chapter 1, which presents a different perspective on Christopher Columbus, European exploration, and the colonization of the Americas. The impact on our students was remarkable. They were deeply engaged in the reading, asked thoughtful questions, and were eager to continue reading. Experiencing history through a different lens encouraged them to think critically about whose perspectives are represented in historical narratives and whose voices may have been left out.\r\n\r\nLater this year, the books about the Great Migration and the Harlem Renaissance will give students another opportunity to explore history through the experiences and voices of African Americans. As students learn about the obstacles and injustices African Americans faced throughout the 1800s and 1900s, they will also examine the factors that led many families to migrate to different parts of the United States in search of greater opportunity, safety, and a new life. They will learn how the Great Migration and Harlem Renaissance created spaces where African Americans could express their identities, creativity, and culture in powerful and unique ways.\r\n\r\nYour generosity is doing much more than putting books on a classroom shelf. You are helping students become more curious, engaged, and thoughtful learners. You are giving them access to stories and perspectives that help them understand our nation's history in a deeper and more meaningful way.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in our students and in their learning. We need to trust kids to touch books. Open books. Mouth books. Throw books. Turn the pages. Look at the upside-down and right-side up. Your support helped me bring more books into this classroom and this school! Using the physical books, a projected version of the books and ChatEditor - a version of the communication app that a majority of students are using - we were able to make the story, Dear Zoo, come alive!!!\r\n\r\nWe got to talk about animals and animal sounds. It was just lovely to see kids being encouraged to interact with reading and books. I am so appreciative of the materials and the donations. First and foremost the materials originally needed by this project were given to me while this project was being funded, then they became unavailable online and I had to pivot anyway. It's funny how life works! Instead of funding seat sacks, your donation went towards a much needed new partition in the bathroom, more snacks for students, more supplies such as extra pencil boxes in case the ones I had broke. \r\nI am so excited to hand out individual pencil boxes to my students and help them with learning to take care of their own materials, stay organized, and be prepared for their learning. Specifically, they will most enjoy using the dry erase markers to practice learning their names, letters, and other concepts throughout the year. They will have their own erasers and really start to feel empowered to keep things organized. \r\nThe seat sacks I got from another source are already working to keep things organized and students have been learning to find their correct books and store them in an accessible manner. Having a new space can be so daunting but this made it a beautiful fresh start instead. The carpet makes the space so inviting, bright, and fun for my kindergarten students. Having something new is so nice for them to experience.\r\nThe new bright toolkits in the center of the tables have also helped with organization and appeal. They are so easily able to share and access the crayons and materials and also recognize colors. Thanks also for the paper, sheet protectors, and paper cutter. They are coming in handy to create materials for my student's learning. The impact is HUGE from your kindness.
