The students' excitement when they first saw the new books and supplies was unforgettable. Having access to high-quality literature and new notebooks has helped my students grow not only academically but also emotionally. These materials have created new opportunities for engagement, creativity, and meaningful learning experiences every day.\r\n\r\nOne of the main texts we are reading this year is Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan. This book has had an incredible impact on my students because many of them can personally relate to Esperanza's journey. The themes of family, perseverance, hard work, and hope have sparked powerful conversations in our classroom. Students are learning about resilience and empathy as they discuss Esperanza's struggles and triumphs. As part of our reading lessons, we will be writing a compare-and-contrast essay about Esperanza and Miguel. This writing task helps students develop important literacy skills, such as identifying character traits, analyzing relationships, and supporting their ideas with text evidence.\r\n\r\nFollowing Esperanza Rising, we will be reading Holes by Louis Sachar. This book provides a wonderful opportunity for students to think critically and express their opinions through writing. We will transition into an opinion essay, where students will learn to take a stance, organize their ideas, and use evidence from the story to support their arguments. Both of these texts introduce students to different genres, writing styles, and life lessons while strengthening their reading comprehension and writing fluency.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is a dynamic and collaborative process. Students often read together in pairs or small groups, pausing to discuss important moments and share their thoughts. During independent reading time, I see so many students eagerly diving into their books, completely immersed in the story. Many of my students are naturally strong readers who love spending their free time reading, and these new books have only deepened that love. They are constantly asking when we can read the next chapter or whether we can have extra reading time. It's a wonderful problem to have! Seeing their enthusiasm reminds me how powerful the right books can be in inspiring young minds.\r\n\r\nThe notebooks we received have also been an essential tool in supporting student learning across all subjects. We use them as interactive notebooks for math, writing, science, and social studies. They help students organize their thoughts, reflect on lessons, and take ownership of their learning. For example, in math, students use their notebooks to record step-by-step examples and create visual representations of their work. In writing, they use them to brainstorm, plan, and revise their essays. In science and social studies, they take notes, complete graphic organizers, and write reflections about what they've learned. These notebooks encourage responsibility and help students develop organizational skills that will benefit them for years to come.\r\n\r\nOverall, these materials have transformed the learning environment in my classroom. The new books have made reading exciting and relatable, while the notebooks have given students a structured, creative space to think and learn. I've seen students grow more confident in sharing their ideas and more willing to take risks in both reading and writing. They are learning to express themselves with clarity, make connections to the world around them, and find joy in the process of learning.\r\n\r\nThanks to the generosity of our donors, my students now have the tools and resources they need to thrive. Every day, I see how these materials inspire curiosity, build confidence, and foster a deeper love for learning. I am incredibly grateful for the impact this project has had—it has truly made a difference in my students' education and in their excitement for reading and discovery.","fullyFundedDate":1760710215280,"projectUrl":"project/future-leaders-in-the-making/9764892/","projectTitle":"Future Leaders in the Making!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Amaya","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10036389_orig.jpg?crop=1063,1063,x0,y120&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758902927973","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/missamaya"},{"teacherId":9664942,"projectId":9127586,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of our special education classroom serving students from kindergarten through 3rd grade with moderate to severe needs. The materials you helped provide have already made a noticeable difference in how our students engage with learning. From sensory tools to adaptive learning resources, these items have created a more inclusive, accessible, and stimulating environment tailored to each child's unique learning style.\r\n\r\nOne memorable moment was when we introduced a new set of sensory bins and communication tools during our morning centers. One of our non-verbal students, who typically hesitates to engage, immediately lit up when exploring the textures and visuals. He used his new communication board to request more time with the activity—his first time initiating a request independently. Seeing that moment of connection and confidence grow was incredibly moving and a direct result of your kindness.\r\n\r\nCurrently, our class is working on a unit about community helpers, and with the new visual supports and hands-on materials, students are actively participating in matching jobs to tools, practicing role play, and even building small \"community scenes\" using adaptive blocks and figurines. These next steps are helping develop not only academic understanding but also social-emotional skills like turn-taking and collaboration. We're excited to keep building on this momentum.","fullyFundedDate":1746785841032,"projectUrl":"project/sensory-success-creating-a-calm-and-eng/9127586/","projectTitle":"Sensory Success: Creating a Calm and Engaging Learning Space","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. B. The moment the boxes arrived, my k-1st-grade students with extensive needs were filled with joy and curiosity. They were especially drawn to the bright Mega Bloks and colorful fidget games, which we now use to build vocabulary, fine motor skills, and collaborative play. The Pop for Sight Words game and CVC puzzles are student favorites during literacy centers, where learners can explore sounds, build words, and read with more confidence each day.\r\n\r\nThe new resources have allowed us to create a multi-sensory, engaging, and inclusive ELA learning space. We laminated visual supports, flash cards, and sentence strips using the laminator and pouches—making them durable and accessible for repeated use. Tools like the LeapFrog Alphabet Book and Montessori puzzles are now part of our daily rotations, supporting everything from letter-sound correspondence to sequencing and storytelling. The alphabet eggs, stacking pegboards, and threading beads not only boost academic development but also help improve focus and fine motor coordination. These materials have transformed our classroom into a place where students are excited to learn, create, and grow—thank you for making this possible.","fullyFundedDate":1741874163924,"projectUrl":"project/support-me-to-create-ela-centers/9127570/","projectTitle":"Support Me to Create ELA Centers","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. B. When the students first saw the Posh Creations bean bag chair, squishy toys, dot markers, and sensory stickers, their faces lit up with excitement. The bean bag quickly became a favorite spot in our Calm Corner, where students can relax and reset when they're feeling overwhelmed. The squishy toys and textured stickers are now part of our daily routine, helping students self-regulate and stay focused during lessons—especially those who benefit from sensory input.\r\n\r\nThe dot markers and activity book added a creative spark to our learning centers, making early literacy and fine motor practice fun and accessible. One of our most memorable moments was watching a student who typically struggles with writing proudly complete a colorful dot art project—something they felt truly confident about. These resources are now woven into our academic and social-emotional learning activities, and we're excited to continue using them in upcoming literacy centers and mindfulness routines. Students now transition smoothly between activities, take ownership of their learning, and explore new concepts with confidence.\r\n\r\nNext, we're expanding on our current science unit about plants by creating a \"garden center\" where students can explore plant life cycles through sensory bins, matching cards, and a pretend play flower shop. I thought, \"Who would want to donate to a complete stranger?\" I am glad I was wrong. In my district, there is a lot of emphasis and push for more mental health support for our students, which is great, but they always seem to forget that students need mental health support even at the elementary level. Sadly, we are always left out of the equation, and counselors at the elementary level find themselves having to always buy everything for our students. \r\n\r\nMy office was absolutely empty; there was no place for students to work. Whenever i ran counseling groups they had to seat in the ground and work on the floor. Thanks to Donors Choose, they now have a place to sit and learn new SEL skills. They have a table to work on and collaborate, and that is the best part.\r\n\r\nWhen students walk into my office, they feel welcome and safe because they are walking into a welcoming counseling office rather than an empty place with a desk and a bin bag.","fullyFundedDate":1729274035834,"projectUrl":"project/welcoming-counseling-office/8670049/","projectTitle":"Welcoming Counseling Office","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Davalos","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9684564_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1724046256231","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9684564"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_68769","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":567,"numTeachers":26,"percentFrplEligible":77,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":90,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"21.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":69.5,"schoolId":68769,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Lyndon B Johnson Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Lyndon B Johnson Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/desert-sands-unified-school-district/lyndon-b-johnson-elementary-school/68769"}
