Because of you, my students now have access to books that explore science topics as well as themes of gender and race, helping them build both academic skills and a deeper understanding of the world around them. Through these texts, students are strengthening key reading skills like building vocabulary through context, identifying main ideas and themes, analyzing characters, and using evidence from the text to support their thinking. Just as importantly, these books open the door to meaningful conversations about identity, fairness, curiosity, and discovery.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active, thoughtful, and joyful. Science-related texts spark curiosity and questioning, while books focused on gender and race encourage empathy and respectful discussion. The variety of topics has helped every student find something that feels interesting and relevant to them, making reading time something they truly look forward to.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who were previously hesitant readers are especially excited about these new books. Some are drawn to the science topics and love sharing new facts, while others feel seen and represented in stories that reflect diverse identities and experiences. They're more confident, more engaged, and proud to talk about what they're reading. My students have been using the microscope during our life science unit to observe plant cells, pond water samples, and even insects. Many students couldn't stop asking questions and sharing what they saw. The solar system model has brought our space unit to life as well. Students have been using it to track planetary orbits, understand rotation and revolution, and visualize how eclipses occur.\r\n\r\nThe day we unpacked the microscope and solar model, the classroom lit up with excitement. It's been incredible to see how these tools have not only deepened understanding but also boosted engagement and confidence across the board.\r\n\r\nUp next, students will be designing their own \"space missions,\" where they'll use the solar model to plan travel routes and research planets to \"visit.\" At the same time, we'll continue exploring microbiology by creating slides of various everyday objects to examine under the microscope. Your support gave us the tools to spark genuine curiosity—and that impact will carry far beyond this unit.
