Two examples of many writing exercises we did that were new to my 7th graders were analysis of theme and symbolism. \r\n\r\nTouching Spirit Bear has a literal story about a boy finding himself but really there are hidden symbols in his transformation which young students would not have noticed unless we did a deep dive together. Many students were surprised to find out that the Kumode Bear in a way symbolized Cole's higher self. I am hoping that the lessons they learned will allow them to use their critical thinking skills in the future.\r\n\r\nUnderstanding the many themes like patience, forgiveness, justice and most importantly discipline took many different lessons to unpack. It was difficult to talk about discipline with young students as many did not understand that change is not immediate but takes acts of discipline. Young students are usually in a rush! For them to learn this lesson I had them bring a rock to school everyday. That was hard for some! Then, for 2 weeks, students had to look at the rock for 3 minutes and practice a type of meditation. That was especially hard for many students! I taught them to gently push thoughts aside and only observe the rock. This mirror what the main character went through by using symbolism to show that it is HARD to have discipline but it is what is needed to have real change.","fullyFundedDate":1753036614924,"projectUrl":"project/coming-of-age-story/9423022/","projectTitle":"Coming-of-age Story","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Flores","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10059596"},{"teacherId":9967430,"projectId":9160200,"letterContent":"They say it is the simple things that make all of the difference in all that we do. I have been teaching for over 30 years and my first go with Donor's Choose was last year. I asked for a laminator. I asked for one because the students love to keep their posters and charts that they create in Spanish class to demonstrate understanding and knowledge. \r\n If I ask the school secretary to laminate, I am questioned, teased, and told that the laminator is for school use - such as educational posters that all will be able to see.\r\n I am beyond that. \r\n I know that each student matters and that their \"products\" are proof of their hard work and abilities. Many former students will tell me that they still have \"such and such\" projects on their wall in their room, but the edges are getting torn, the color is fading.\r\n With my own personal laminator, the students are able to laminate and keep their projects, show pride in their abilities, and are able to post a snapshot of time spent learning another language.\r\n When the students take their project out of the machine, it is a treat to see the light and joy on their faces. So pleased with the reward of being diligent, careful, and creative. Then, the extra bonus is that the other students see this as a possibility and put more effort into their future assignments.\r\n I thank you for this chance to be a better educator and advocate for my students. \r\nIt is the simple things that make a big difference, and your simple donation has done just that.","fullyFundedDate":1742790940058,"projectUrl":"project/espaol-es-fantstico/9160200/","projectTitle":"Español Es Fantástico","teacherDisplayName":"Sra. My 8th graders have demonstrated incredible perseverance and resilience this year, overcoming numerous challenges with determination and hard work. The tie-dye project was a wonderful way to reward their efforts with a creative and hands-on activity that was both fun and educational. Students were excited to explore the process, collaborate with their peers, and create vibrant, personalized T-shirts that they'll cherish as a reminder of their accomplishments.\r\n\r\nThis project also provided a unique opportunity to incorporate STEM concepts, as students learned about the chemical reactions involved in dyeing fabrics and experimented with different designs and patterns. It was inspiring to see their creativity shine while engaging in teamwork and problem-solving.
