Each day that a class meets for school at Horseshoe Lake we find new adventures, new lessons, new beauty, new discoveries, and new weather! While we haven't had any rain since you all helped us acquire our wonderful tent, we did require the use of the tent on our windiest day!\r\n\r\nOn March 26, 2025 Cassandra's 5th/6th grade class came out to Horseshoe Lake for a day of Dandelion exploration. Twelve mph winds were persistant that day, and at times, 20 mph gusts of wind blew threw camp, jostling materials, and amping up energy. For one of our activities that wind was super helpful as it picked up the wishes we made on Dandelion seeds and carried them off swiftly. However that same wind would have made our microscope station impossible if we didn't have our tent for protection. In preparation for this windy day, I proudly, and slightly clumsily, set it up as our science lab! The kids were thrilled when they first saw the new shelter. They immediatley took off their shoes and explored the feeling of being protected inside. They wrestled, and sat together in a circle to discuss plans for the day. It got quite warm in there so we opened the windows to get some fresh air in. During our science stations the kids were able to use the microscopes to view the tiny parts of a Dandelion flower, as well as draw and label their findings without the impossible wind blowing things away. Without that tent, this station wouldn't have been possible, and we couldn't have shared the wonderful microscopic world of plants to these kids for their first time. I felt so grateful for this resource, and for the impact it had on our day, and on student learning. \r\nDonorsChoose is a real blessing for schools like ours who are taking a big leap to offer innovative teaching strategies, and relying on community support. As I plan for a brand new year of Forest School curriculum starting in the Fall of 2025 we will be needing nature journals, craft supplies, and other nature connection tools such as binoculars, and water testing equipment, and a wagon to carry that sturdy AND heavy tent! Keep a look out for our next posting!
