Thank you for providing resources for our classroom to integrate into our learning. These resources provide an avenue for building relationships, social awareness, self-awareness, self- management, and decision-making. Understanding emotions and brain functions at an early age will hopefully inspire the children of today to lead with mental health as a priority.\r\n\r\nI have used literature and storytelling to introduce emotions and strategies to regulate our emotions. To begin, direct instruction through read alouds to the whole group, allows me to emphasize the importance of identifying and regulating emotions with purpose. As they become familiar with spotting emotions, we relate it to characters in our ELA curriculum and integrate empathy. Later, the students are able to choose literature that they are interested in learning more about. The library of SEL literature is available to all throughout the days. If a student is dealing with a particular emotion, I am able to utilize this resource to help him/her better understand more about the emotion. Some of the stories give strategies to help them regulate emotions, which are easy to remember and relatable to this age group. For example, teaching calming techniques through this literature will help the child with breathing technique to \" smell the flower, blow a bubble\". These easy regulation strategies are simple to use throughout our days because we've comprehended the literature, discussed the importance, and practiced.\r\n\r\nFor an extension activity, each student chose a book from The SPOT Collection by Diane Alber. They read their book independently. They created the SPOT identifying the emotion and facial expressions that relate to that emotion. Lastly, the students wrote the message or idea they learned from their story. The student generated SPOTs will be hung in the classroom. As more students read the individual books, they can add their take-away near that SPOT. We will grow and learn from these lessons.\r\n\r\nWe appreciate your generosity and hope you enjoy the photos that give insight to what is happening in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1755716120514,"projectUrl":"project/lifelong-superpower-skills/9435926/","projectTitle":"Lifelong Superpower Skills","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Watson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10065040_orig.png?crop=1512,1512,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1750983210800","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10065040"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_25632","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":430,"numTeachers":21,"percentFrplEligible":77,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":7,"percentWhite":11,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":68,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"20.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":74.5,"schoolId":25632,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Central Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Central Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/central-school-district/central-elementary-school/25632"}
