If it weren't for you, I would have to keep teaching a novel that is outdated and not relatable to my current ELs and struggling readers. This book allowed them to feel a sense of accomplishment when they finished it, and it leaves the reader with an open-ended ending. \r\n\r\nThis allowed us to create a possible conclusion ourselves and have a wonderful discussion about it. It also opens up a rich debate and discussion about gun violence and gun use in general. It gave a voice to my students and helped them understand what gang violence looks like in another pocket of the United States.
