With this novel, students were able to dive into a rich study of perspective, empathy, and what it means to be kind—even when it's not easy. Wonder allowed us to explore character motivation, point of view, theme, and text evidence in meaningful ways.\r\n\r\nSome students have connected especially deeply to Wonder. A few who are usually shy during discussions have opened up while talking about August's experiences, relating to moments when they themselves have felt different or misunderstood. Others have been inspired to show more kindness throughout the day—holding doors, helping classmates, and choosing their words more thoughtfully.\r\nYour donation didn't just give us a book—it helped build empathy, confidence, and a stronger sense of community in our classroom. Thanks to your kindness, my students have been given the opportunity to connect with a story that reflects their own experiences and culture while strengthening their reading skills and love for literature.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, Esperanza Renace has become more than just a book—it's a powerful tool for learning. As we read, we explore essential skills such as analyzing character development, identifying themes of resilience and hope, and making connections to historical and cultural contexts. This story allows my students to discuss real-life issues, such as immigration, perseverance, and family, fostering both critical thinking and meaningful conversations. These lessons are not only improving their literacy skills but also helping them see themselves and their families reflected in the literature we study.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is an interactive and collaborative experience. Students engage in small-group discussions, partner activities, and whole-class debates, all centered around this text. One student, Zuleyka, who usually hesitates to ask for help, has shown newfound confidence in our discussions about Esperanza's journey. Her enthusiasm for the story has encouraged her to participate more and even inspire her peers. Another student, Christopher, particularly enjoys the group reading sessions where he eagerly shares his thoughts about the characters' struggles and triumphs. These moments are a reminder of how impactful it is for students to see themselves in the stories they read.","fullyFundedDate":1728012479357,"projectUrl":"project/let-them-dive-into-an-adventure-with-esp/8684069/","projectTitle":"Let Them Dive Into an Adventure With Esperanza Renace","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Varela","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9694294_orig.jpg?crop=914,914,x0,y310&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1724818941360","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9694294"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_63549","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":429,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":92,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"17.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":77.5,"schoolId":63549,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Olive Street Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Olive Street Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/anaheim-elementary-school-district/olive-street-elementary-school/63549"}
