Many of our students struggle with emotional regulation, impulse control, self-esteem, and expressing their feelings in healthy ways. These materials gave them safe, structured, and creative outlets to practice those skills.\r\n\r\nThe markers and journals became powerful tools for self-expression. Students who often shut down or become oppositional were able to draw or write about their feelings instead of acting out. For several students with autism, having a visual and creative way to communicate helped reduce frustration and emotional outbursts.\r\n\r\nFidgets and kinetic sand provided important sensory regulation during both classroom lessons and group counseling sessions. Students with ADHD especially benefited from having appropriate tools to help them focus, which increased their ability to participate in discussions about emotions, coping skills, and problem-solving.\r\n\r\nThe games created opportunities to practice turn-taking, perspective-taking, and positive peer interactions in a structured and supportive environment. During our self-esteem group counseling sessions, students used the journals and art materials to identify their strengths, set goals, and reflect on their growth. We saw students begin to use more positive self-talk and demonstrate increased confidence.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these materials helped create a calm, engaging, and emotionally safe space where students felt supported. Instead of feeling defined by their behaviors, they were able to see themselves as capable, creative, and valued members of our school community.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has directly supported their emotional growth, self-regulation, and self-esteem. Thank you for helping our students learn that their feelings matter and that they have the tools to succeed.","fullyFundedDate":1767401169049,"projectUrl":"project/art-with-heart-supporting-sel-for-stude/9686211/","projectTitle":"Art With Heart: Supporting SEL for Students With Disabilities","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hernandez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8478806_orig.jpg?crop=750,750,x0,y257&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1653614863232","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8478806"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_91426","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":662,"numTeachers":30,"percentFrplEligible":72,"percentAsian":6,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":6,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":81,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"22.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":88.4,"schoolId":91426,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Benito Juarez Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Benito Juarez Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/anaheim-elementary-school-district/benito-juarez-elementary-school/91426"}
