I was so excited to receive these beautiful books and to share them with my students. These texts helped reinforce notions of empathy and insight to diverse cultures. It fostered students' abilities to relate to different cultures; students were so excited to share similarities of their families and cultures. In terms of literary elements, several of these books had deeper allegories, metaphors, and similes that we were able to dissect as a whole, leading to discussions on how to build colorful imagery, descriptions, and meanings.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an important skill reinforced particularly in the elementary levels, which are critical to building a strong foundation. Therefore, I start every elementary K-2nd art class with a read-aloud. Throughout the book, I will pause and ask students comprehension questions, which can be as simple as asking about what happened to seeing what predictions students have. Stories also allow us to appreciate the art and illustrations that help to fortify students' understanding. We then segue to some related craft, giving students a hands-on opportunity to express their creativity and to also refine their artistic skills.\r\n\r\nWhile most students enjoy these new books, students who especially enjoy these new books are those who can relate in some capacity to either the story characters or the emotions expressed in the story. Another great thing about these books is that students of all cultures are able to excited to express similarities from their own families and cultural practices and beliefs. For instance, just like in \"Eyes that Kiss in the Corner,\" many cultures have their own stories and myths. It's a great way for not only students to learn from and appreciate each other's cultures, but also for me as the teacher too.\r\n\r\nNo words can express the gratitude I have for your generosity in helping to build a more expansive library aimed to foster kindness, empathy, and diversity (so I'll let the kids do so for me)!","fullyFundedDate":1727977259740,"projectUrl":"project/celebrate-differences-through-books/8622932/","projectTitle":"Celebrate Differences Through Books!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Huang","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8303670"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_79968","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":600,"numTeachers":32,"percentFrplEligible":68,"percentAsian":34,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":60,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"18.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":80.0,"schoolId":79968,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Marguerita Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Marguerita Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/alhambra-unified-school-district/marguerita-elementary-school/79968"}
