Being a public Montessori school, with specific materials necessary to support the curriculum, the majority of the budget goes to the core curriculum. That leaves us educators to be creative, thrifty, and/or use our own money to get needed materials. \r\n\r\nJulia Cook is a former teacher and school counselor and has written books for young learners covering a range of social and emotional topics. Using books like \"Rumor Has It\", \"What's in it for Me?\", and \"Hygiene You Stink\", I'm able to broach potentially sensitive or embarrassing topics in whole class or smaller group lessons with cute characters and some simple solutions. \r\n\r\nWorking at a diverse and inclusive public school in Oakland means representation matters. It is crucial that we use books, art, history, and media that represent our beautiful population. Adding the skin-tone crayons to my art supplies has been wonderful for self-portrait projects I like to do with my students. In one recent group that focuses on self-empowerment, they had fun holding the crayons up to each other and matching the colors. \r\n\r\nThe action figures for my office doll house showcasing various careers (such as astronaut, chef, mail carrier, doctor) is a huge hit with my younger students.
