The anchor charts are posted around the room and have been frequently used for reference. For example, I taught my students to use the RACES strategy for responding to analysis question; the RACES anchor chart helped to provide an example of what to do. They referred back to the chart specifically when elaborating and supporting their answers. Furthermore, the students referenced the RACES anchor chart when they were writing their expository essays. They were able to expand the citing evidence and explain portion of the strategy to improve their own paragraphs. \r\n\r\nThe color pencils are another resource that has greatly benefited my students. Before Christmas break, my students read a story called \"Briar Rose\". Their task was to describe how a theme was developed throughout the story, complete a plot diagram of the story, and complete a character analysis. This information needed to be displayed on a poster. The students were able to not only accomplish the task, but they display their learning in colorful and creative ways. Another assignment where the colored pencils were helpful was with independent reading projects. One student who was assigned the novel \"Lord of the Flies\" utilized the colored pencils in her project by drawing and coloring masks. She completed a character analysis for two characters and put the information on the masks she created. Another student used the colored pencils to recreate a scene from the novel \"Tuck Everlasting\" and write a short summary. Her intellect and artistic talent really shone through this assignment; and it could not have been done without the colored pencil resources. \r\n\r\nThis semester, my students will continue to use the resources provided by your donation. They will create a storm-survival guide that ties in with one of the short stories we'll read. They will be able to reference the writing process posters when we begin writing personal narratives. They will continue to refer back to the RACES anchor chart as they refine their ability to answer analysis questions.
