The Care Closet has been a passion project that was initiated by only one parent with the deep desire to help the students in our community who she knew were struggling to get their basic needs met. I quickly jumped on board, knowing that a School Care Closet could mean the difference between survival and success for some of our students. \r\n\r\nLast school year, we were able to help over 50 students. Many came because of a clothing mishap in the middle of the school day. I wont ever forget the first brave soul who came to me and was vulnerable enough to tell us she needed more clothing and hygiene products at home. Or the senior who didn't let any of her peers know what she was really experiencing at home, but quietly and invincibly was supporting herself and wondering how she was going to put herself through college. \r\n\r\nWhen this school year started, I knew that we could reach even more students with the Care Closet. And I wanted to make sure that we were operating at our full potential. At our school, there is a great network of those who have graciously donated and kept our closet stocked. So, we have had the wonderful \"problem\" of having so many clothes and hygiene products that we sometimes didn't know how to store all of it. On top of that, there aren't many locations in a school that fit every need of a Care Closet. (Schools weren't made with the idea of housing a one-stop-shop for those in need.) Therefore, students who came to the Care Closet were often having to leave the room and walk around the hallways to find a bathroom and see if what they had picked out would work well enough for them. This really clashed with the stigma that is already attached to using a resource like the Care Closet.\r\n\r\nThis is where DonorsChoose and you all came into the picture. I wanted to make sure that we could offer our students privacy and safe space. And we needed to be able to properly access all of the donated material we had and give our students as much choice and support as possible. With DonorsChoose, those dreams became a reality. Thanks to everyone who donated to this project, our School Care Closet got a privacy wall, mirrors, storage bins, and shelving! Students are able to change and try on clothes in the same room, and we can now appropriately store and display all that we have to offer!\r\n\r\nWith all of this, the Care Closet has served over 100 students just this semester! Many students have gotten to take home clothing and hygiene products when they are unable to get more that they need due to socioeconomic status. Some are recurring visitors who feel safe at our Care Closet to open up and ask for the support that they need. Our school has been able to connect with more community organizations, churches, and individual partners who have been so excited about the growth of the Care Closet. \r\n\r\nThere is no way to thank you enough for the contribution that you have made to my school and our students. Thank you for being a part of the village that is making sure all of our students are able to succeed no matter their background.","fullyFundedDate":1755724511735,"projectUrl":"project/care-closet-for-students-in-need/9546210/","projectTitle":"Care Closet for Students In-Need","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Means","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10133469_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754768516772","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10133469"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_56677","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1220,"numTeachers":78,"percentFrplEligible":58,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":10,"percentWhite":67,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":11,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"15.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":61.5,"schoolId":56677,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Searcy High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Searcy High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/arkansas/searcy-school-district/searcy-high-school/56677"}
