I cannot explain how excited my kids were to receive our soccer, goals, and our basketballs and goals. They were jumping, screaming, and begging me to set everything up RIGHT NOW! :) We took this opportunity to learn about team sports, competition, and cooperation. The very first day we took out the soccer and the goals, the kids broke into teams and we had a small fight when someone blocked a goal. That gave us a great opportunity to sit down and talk about losing, about winning, and about setbacks and how to overcome them. \r\n\r\nOur basketball goal had much the same issue and conversations. My kids are special needs kids. They don't do well at sharing and winning or losing. We are working on this. And having this sports equipment has allowed us to have many discussions over health, exercise, and wellness in general. It has been incorporated into our P.E. hour, our SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) time, and into our every day lessons (we used scoring goals to do some math work one day). \r\n\r\nMy kids have been begging me to host a tournament of kids vs. teachers. Our plan is to practice super hard, and then we're going to challenge the middle school teachers and students to a gave vs. the elementary students and teachers. We are going to talk about how to win, how to lose, how to a good sport, and we're even monitoring our health throughout our practice (are we hydrated? is our heart-rate elevated? are we breathing hard?). \r\n\r\nThis has been an amazing addition to our classroom. It means so much to me and to my students. We have set up our bird feeders and learned about our local wildlife. Our feeders are set up right outside of our classroom. The kids request to go out daily to see the birds and refill their feeders. They were so excited to watch from our backdoor to see the birds fly in a feed from our feeders, or the first time they noticed that the feeders were empty. \r\n\r\nWhen I first unboxed the items, the kids got super excited. We read the books together and talked about why birds were an important part of our ecosystem. The kids could not wait until we went outside to put up the feeders, and now they're eagerly awaiting the spring so we can plant our seeds and see what blooms.\r\n\r\nOur next project with this will be to plant the flowers while we discuss bees and how important they are to our ecosystem. Bees are very important, as I'm sure you know, and the plants we requested are great pollenating plants. These will also attract butterflies and probably several different insects. We're going to do an entire unit over what insects do for our planet, and I could not be more excited. When my kids are having an afternoon dip in blood sugar, we have some of the fruit snacks and that keeps them hanging in. \r\n\r\nSince instituting a snack time, my kids have had had a huge improvement in attitude and in their school work. And, as an unforeseen bonus, my kids have learned to tell time! They know that their first snacks are at 10:35 and the afternoon snack is at 2:35. They are also working on learning how to tell me how many more minutes until snacks. That may not sound like a big deal, but these are special needs kids who are willingly learning how tell time. \r\n\r\nThank you again for this.
