They immediately got very excited when they saw the new shiny books. The books do a very good job of drawing the attention of the students. Everyday when the students have the opportunity to read a book they pick one of the books donated.\r\n The books keep the students engaged, but they also teach social emotional lessons. When a student picks up a Dork Diaries or a Dogman book it is rare to see them put it down, because of how fun they are. Likewise, when they pick up a food series book they read with lots of emotion, because it is fun to read and it teaches them a lesson.","fullyFundedDate":1759592023964,"projectUrl":"project/engaging-books/9673304/","projectTitle":"Engaging Books","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Derbyshire","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9611206_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1722103257321","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9611206"},{"teacherId":8380549,"projectId":9436988,"letterContent":"Thank you for giving my 5th graders copies of Crenshaw to read as a class. Together, we practiced analyzing the characters, making predictions, making inferences and conclusions as we read the book together during the first quarter of our school year.\r\n\r\nStudents really enjoyed imagining what it is like to have an invisible friend. We talked about the stress that Jackson experienced and how Crenshaw helped him power through tough times. \r\n\r\nWe also talked about what it feels like to see grown-up problems through a child's eyes and how parents can make mistakes and struggle while they try to solve problems.\r\n\r\nStudents learned new words and used a novel study guide to do \"quick writes\" after reading. These short writing exercises really helped encourage students to express their thoughts and analyze text without the stress of a long essay assignment.\r\n\r\nWe also dissected metaphors and similes that the author sprinkles throughout the story to help us imagine things. Students learned how they too can use them to make writing more interesting. \r\n\r\nA good book is like a \"movie going on in your head\"!","fullyFundedDate":1753368519514,"projectUrl":"project/best-book-to-jump-start-5th-grade/9436988/","projectTitle":"Best Book to Jump-Start 5th Grade","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Arden","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8380549_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1739850654874","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8380549"},{"teacherId":8393829,"projectId":9187297,"letterContent":"My students have greatly enjoyed having these materials in the classroom. Nothing is more enriching than having hands on activities that can aide all learners in their understanding in math. They use team work to discuss what they are doing and achieve it. It also provided materials that have been used for my students who need extra practice with their math facts in my room. \r\n\r\nThank you for making this an amazing and enriching experience for them in the classroom. Rest assured the students from Mission View's dual language 5th grade loved the Time for Kids series with nonfiction content. \r\n\r\nStudents in my class read these regularly as a morning activity, and we use the texts to learn more about vocabulary, grammar and language. The topics include: money in world economies, famous historical events, the development of the United States with westward expansion, natural disasters, wildlife, exotic species as well as many others. \r\n\r\nReading and writing about informational text is an important 5th grade skill that we practice often.
