During a recent design challenge, the students used pipe cleaners, pony beads and other recycled materials to design a house. We then joined the houses together to create a neighborhood and saw how community is formed. We have also used the stickers from this project to spark creative writing, as the kids placed stickers on paper and drew details to describe and tell a story about family. The new loose-parts trays and small baskets made gathering materials seamless, allowing the kinders to focus completely on designing, problem-solving, and collaborating without missing a beat.\r\n\r\nAs the boxes arrived and I began opening them, I got so many questions about what was inside. I let the students know that some very generous people had donated to our classroom so that we could have things that would help us learn all year long. They were so excited when they saw the colorful beads, stickers, and brand-new trays and baskets. One of my five-year-olds pointed to the mail slot cubbies after I set them up and said, \"Look! We get our own mailboxes!\" They have been thoroughly enjoying these new materials, and I have felt a huge sense of relief this year having these things right on hand to use in our everyday tasks. \r\n\r\nNow that our classroom supplies are fully set up, I see my students taking complete ownership of their classroom community. In the second quarter of the year, we will be starting our Quilt Project that is tied to science and ELA standards. They will be working towards creating their own quilt square to show how colors, shapes and different materials work together to create and tell stories. The supplies from this Donors Choose project will be a huge help to keep this project moving. By funding our project and you have helped me create a classroom that runs smoothly, is prepared for learning and honors our students' rights to a quality education. Our dramatic play rug is a favorite place for dinosaurs and insects to gather to create a whole world of its own. The bubble toys keep my kids calm and regulated in the calm corner of our classroom and double as a timer as well! Most students have a favorite color they will use when they go to take a break.
