As we all know, a lot of people grow up with no financial education and that leads to a rude awakening when we become adults. These books are the first step to giving them a better shot than most people as they graduate high school. \r\n\r\nReading is a particularly difficult subject to teach at our school, so creativity and making reading fun is especially essential. I've utilized group reading strategies, such as students each reading a section of the book, creating a presentation, and showing it to their partners. Giving them ownership over the reading and what they are reading has been extremely helpful. Even simply having them use the books as long word searches. Students will read and when they find a word or phrase they don't understand, their job is to research the word/phrase and write down what it means in their own words. \r\n\r\nIt seems like the reading strategies we've been using in class have been effective because I've had 2 students ask me if they could check out books to read at home! That was easily two of the best surprises I've had as a teacher. Your contributions have made it possible for students to practice their reading skills and gain a deeper understanding of financial skills that are necessary to function in everyday life as an adult.
