Your generosity gave my students more than books—it provided meaningful experiences, opportunities for discussion, and connections that extended beyond the pages. We were especially excited to use Ghost and The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, which quickly became powerful additions to our classroom learning.\r\n\r\nThese texts introduced and strengthened important reading skills such as character analysis, identifying themes, making inferences, and supporting ideas with text evidence. While students worked on academic skills, one lesson stood out above all others: determination. Through the journeys of Ghost and William, students saw how perseverance and resilience can help people overcome challenges and pursue their goals.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom became a shared experience. We read together as a whole class using Audible while students followed along in their books. Students kept journals and participated in group discussions where they reflected, made predictions, and connected with the stories. Reading can sometimes be a challenge to make exciting for middle school students, so hearing students walk into class and ask, \"Are we reading today?\" became one of the most rewarding moments for me as a teacher.\r\n\r\nStudents especially connected with Ghost and his journey of overcoming obstacles. As a class, they rooted for him out loud and became emotionally invested in his successes and struggles. Many students made personal connections with the characters and saw parts of themselves reflected in the stories. Watching students engage with books in such a genuine way reminded me how powerful access to meaningful literature can be.\r\n\r\nThank you again, Sonic Drive-In, for investing in our students and helping create a classroom where reading became something students genuinely looked forward to. Your generosity created moments of learning, connection, and excitement that our class will remember long after these books are finished.","fullyFundedDate":1757952803776,"projectUrl":"project/fueling-literacy-with-studysync-texts-fo/9401750/","projectTitle":"Fueling Literacy with StudySync Texts for 7th Grade","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Westrope","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9084548_orig.jpg?crop=2156,2156,x0,y704&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1687807014680","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9084548"},{"teacherId":9084548,"projectId":7464344,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your donation! Both the students and I have had a blast using our new materials. We love following along in our books while listening to the audiobook. This was especially fun with The Crossover by Kwame Alexander; the voice actor reads the poem with such enthusiasm that during the action shots, I had 7th-grade boys following along, rooting for the protagonists by saying \"threee.\" This book is written in a series of poems, so it was a good introduction to poetry and how you can get a lot of information from a poem. This book explored various life themes, framing them under the title \"Basketball Rules.\"These themes ranged from family and brotherhood to change, self-discovery, grief, and loss. This was a fun read, and my 7th graders enjoyed it. \r\n\r\nIn the 8th grade, we read \"Ghost Boys\" by Jewell Parker Rhodes. This book was a heavy read, but the class was enthralled and invested from the very beginning. The book sparked critical conversations about our world and some of the issues that many of us face. We also followed along in our books while listening to the audiobook. Your generosity has provided great learning opportunities, allowing me to get the students excited about literature.","fullyFundedDate":1697489342152,"projectUrl":"project/learning-through-literature/7464344/","projectTitle":"Learning Through Literature","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Westrope","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9084548_orig.jpg?crop=2156,2156,x0,y704&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1687807014680","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9084548"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_57737","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":215,"numTeachers":12,"percentFrplEligible":84,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":13,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":84,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"17.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":50.0,"schoolId":57737,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Leonor Hambly K-8 School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Leonor Hambly K-8 School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/arizona/hayden-winkelman-unified-sd-41/leonor-hambly-middle-school/57737"}
