Your contribution has transformed our recent literature unit. While we know many of you are avid readers yourselves, you may wonder what the actual teaching of a book looks like. With this novel, we covered all our Arizona state literature standards by introducing critical skills: students learned to analyze complex characters and sophisticated dialogue, identify subtle figurative language, and describe internal and external conflict. Most importantly, they practiced the rigorous skill of citing strong textual evidence to support their comprehension and claims. Because this is the anticipated sequel to a book many students read last year, the immediate connection and engagement provided a uniquely fertile ground for advanced literary analysis.\r\n\r\n Reading in our 8th-grade classroom is not a silent, solitary endeavor—it is a dynamic, collaborative process. Our students use their new copies of \"Out of My Heart\" daily, not just for reading, but for engaging with the text through active annotation, where they highlight key vocabulary and tag examples of figurative language. Reading time often transitions seamlessly into collaborative small-group discussions, allowing them to debate Melody's choices and the author's craft. We utilize shared documents for evidence tracking, making the act of reading a tangible, real-time preparation for their larger written assessments. This hands-on, interactive approach ensures every student is an active participant in unraveling the text's themes and meanings.\r\n\r\n The impact of these new books has been immediate and profound, particularly among students who are typically more reluctant readers. Having the sequel in their hands provided a strong anchor; students who struggled with engagement last year are now excitedly flipping pages, eager to see what happens next. Knowing that every student has their own copy to use within the classroom has cultivated a sense of independence and excitement that will benefit their literacy skills for years to come. Thank you once again, Donors Choose Community, for making this possible.","fullyFundedDate":1755700431857,"projectUrl":"project/reading-with-a-purpose/9534468/","projectTitle":"Reading with a Purpose","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. DeNardis","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2409940_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1451446760367","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2409940"},{"teacherId":8360448,"projectId":9278663,"letterContent":"I wanted to again say thank you for your support and donations. When sitting in front of teenage students who have a history of failing school and you can see the stress and doubt on their faces when you start talking about grades and credits and what happens if they don't meet the minimum grades to pass, it's heartbreaking. However, as time goes by, and they see that you are for real, that you really CAN help them little by little, that you are willing to give up time just for them and they see the grades rise over a few months, you see the doubt and stress leave their bodies and start to see the smiles. When you praise them for a job well done or for getting a concept that was really hard or turn in a massive project they actually never planned on doing- you start to see the change and the internal voice is telling them that \"yeah, I really can do this\" and \"it's really NOT that hard or scary to ask and accept help\". I have several students who went from ALL failing grades last school year (and for most, probably the year before and the year before that) to Passing ALL classes and for some passing 2-3 classes that they never actually had hope of accomplishing. But NOW, they can see a path, they are gaining confidence in themselves and their ability. THAT is what you have helped me to achieve this quarter with them. They come in to a comfortable environment where they can feel vulnerable in asking for help, knowing there IS help and leaving feeling proud of what they have accomplished. Thanks to your support, our ELA classroom has been completely transformed with new table organizers and laptop chargers. The moment we unveiled the new supplies, students immediately began sorting their binders and folders into the new organizers, marveling at how much tidier their workspaces looked. The new chargers have been a lifesaver, especially since our school is one to one with technology and they use their Chromebooks EVERY DAY! No longer do students have to worry about their laptops dying mid-class, as they can now easily plug in and stay focused on their work. These simple additions have had a profound impact, bringing a newfound sense of order and peace to our learning environment.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, your contribution will continue to support our students in their work. With the table organizers keeping worksheets, folders, and other materials in one place, students can spend more time deeply engaging with the content and less time searching for materials. This project has given our students a tangible reminder that there are people who believe in their education and their potential.
