With this project, we have been able to start an after school art club that provides our students with all the needed materials to create their masterpieces. Each week, students meet and work on projects while learning foundational art skills. We've worked on learning the color wheel, different types of lines, and have worked to share our art by making art for community events and helping with decorations. \r\n\r\nIn addition to that, we have been able to use our materials to integrate art into the general education classroom. Students have used clay to make maps of Alaska, paint to create landscapes, and more! These art connections have soldified their understandings and made the learning more hands-on. We could not have had any of these opportunities without this project being completed! We are truly grateful from the bottom of our hearts. I am so excited to continue with our art and see what these students create next! The students loved the opportunity to learn about the mushroom life cycle, and learned a lot in the process. Many of them were completely new to the idea that mushrooms grow from spores to mycelium and eventually fruit into a mushroom! I was surprised at this fact because I teach middle and high schoolers, but often times these fundamental lessons in the life sciences are brushed over, especially in a financial struggling small school like Kokhanok. \r\n\r\nWe first started with the process of inoculating petri dishes with the turkey tail and lion's mane spores, from which I sourced using my own money from a different website. The kids loved the process of setting the tables up as laboratories, sterilizing everything, wearing nitrile gloves and a facemask, using an alcohol lamp, and practicing sterile procedures. They repeatedly kept telling me how cool it was and that they felt like they were in Breaking Bad or that they felt like a mad scientist.\r\n\r\nAfter a few weeks, the petri dishes had inoculated and we sterilized the grain spawn in a pressure cooker that I had brought from home. We took the risk of going straight from agar to grain spawn, and skipped the step of making liquid culture because I was afraid of contamination (my students are new to the process and just a tiny bit sloppy, but thats okay). The bet ended up paying off and we were able to inoculate the grain, transfer it to substrate, and we are currently waiting to begin the fruiting process. It has been amazing, and I cannot thank you enough.","fullyFundedDate":1731512094465,"projectUrl":"project/mushroom-cultivation-and-spore-print-ana/8938705/","projectTitle":"Mushroom Cultivation and Spore Print Analysis","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Romer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9823126"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_56363","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":35,"numTeachers":5,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":97,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"7.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":46.4,"schoolId":56363,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Kokhanok School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Kokhanok School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/alaska/lake-and-peninsula-sch-dist/kokhanok-school/56363"}
