What began as an idea has become an exciting learning experience where students can apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to a real-world challenge—growing plants in the unique conditions of rural Alaska.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials arrived, our students were immediately excited and curious. They wanted to see what was inside, talk about what we could grow, and begin working with the materials. Their excitement grew when they realized that the garden would be something they could build, care for, observe, and learn from throughout the growing season.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue growing and monitoring the plants and collecting data on their growth. Students will compare their observations, create simple graphs, analyze which conditions appear to support healthy growth, and discuss ways to improve our garden. I have also been using the standing tables while teaching, which have made it easier for me to organize my teaching materials, move around the classroom, and keep resources within reach while working with my students. The snacks were also a wonderful treat, and my students were so excited to receive them.
