Because of its late arrival in our school year, we've only had time to read from it once thus far. But students were immediately drawn to Sunny's journey and the questions the book raises about identity and belonging. I'm currently developing a whole unit around the novel, in which students will track Sunny's growth, explore how she comes to accept her identity, and build background knowledge of the story's cultural and historical context. These lessons will support students in analyzing character development, understanding cultural perspectives, and connecting literature to their own lives.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom happens in a mix of whole-group lessons, small groups, and independent reading. Each quarter, students choose a novel for independent study, and I plan to use Akata Witch as one of the guided options this year to provide more structure, support, and shared discussion as they transition into independent reading logs (before it becomes a unit option for next year). The excitement is already palpable! My 8th graders chose this book over several others when given the choice on what to read for a \"First Chapters\" Friday, and a few 6th graders and even former students (currently 7th graders) have stopped by to ask to read it early. Your generosity didn't just provide books; it sparked genuine enthusiasm and laid the foundation for a meaningful, culturally rich reading experience that will grow in impact over time.","fullyFundedDate":1756869178459,"projectUrl":"project/magic-identity-and-adventure-growing/9509183/","projectTitle":"Magic, Identity, and Adventure: Growing Readers with Akata Witch","teacherDisplayName":"Mx.
