Sheltered instruction is a research-based, state-accepted classroom model where subject-certified teachers work with newcomer EL students (usually in their first three years in a United States school, only scoring at a level one or low level two on their English acquisition placement test) to combine targeted language acquisition with state course-of-study standards. In this case, I spent the summer becoming certified to teach all core subjects due to the lack of flexibility in the master schedule to handle the smaller class sizes needed to effectively teach sheltered instruction.\r\nCalculators are expensive and our local budget did not have the funds to provide a new set for a new class. These have been put to good use already this year. They will also be helpful when my juniors take the district-mandated ACT in March.\r\nThe small-group kidney table has been very helpful with allowing me to serve my other EL students in small groups or pull individual students for further remediation of those skills that they may have come to the school without knowing from previous schools.\r\nThank you again for all of your help. My students and I truly appreciate your support.","fullyFundedDate":1758728241991,"projectUrl":"project/el-newcomer-class-starter-pack/9435307/","projectTitle":"EL Newcomer Class Starter Pack","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Cossentine","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2397791_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1515600778826","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/bcossentine"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_95971","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":472,"numTeachers":24,"percentFrplEligible":69,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":52,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":37,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"19.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":71.0,"schoolId":95971,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about West Morgan High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"West Morgan High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/alabama/morgan-county-school-district/west-morgan-high-school/95971"}
