What better way to learn about solids and liquids than with something students already love—cookies, candy, and snacks! Students are able to observe, predict, discuss, and record what happens when different solid foods interact with a liquid. Instead of simply reading about states of matter, they get to experience the concepts through a hands-on classroom investigation that makes learning exciting and meaningful.\r\n\r\nWhen my students saw all of the cookies and snacks, their excitement was immediate! They were eager to participate, make predictions, and share their observations with their classmates. These resources have helped create those special classroom moments where students are learning without feeling like they are simply completing another assignment. As we continue our states of matter unit, students will build on this experience by identifying solids, liquids, and gases around them, discussing their observable properties, and using evidence from their investigations to explain what they have learned. The new resources have been used during small-group discussions, interactive lessons, journaling activities, and question-and-answer sessions that encouraged open and respectful conversations. One memorable moment was seeing the girls confidently share what they learned and support one another through discussions that many had never felt comfortable having before. When the students first saw the materials, they were excited, curious, and eager to participate. They especially enjoyed the hands-on activities and the opportunity to ask questions in a welcoming environment. Students manipulate the letters as they name them, match uppercase and lowercase forms, and practice quick, accurate identification. One memorable moment was watching a student who previously hesitated with letter names confidently complete the arc and proudly say every letter aloud without support. That moment showed real growth and confidence that would not have been possible without these materials.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were excited and eager to get started. Many immediately wanted to touch the letters and ask how the arcs worked. The hands-on nature of the resources made learning feel like a game, and students were highly engaged from the very first use.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for our students include increasing accuracy and speed with letter naming and intentionally connecting letter names to letter sounds. As students become more fluent, we will use the alphabet arcs to support phonics instruction, blending, and early decoding skills.
