For many of them, seeing books in their home language on our classroom shelves is both validating and empowering. It sends the message that their identities and linguistic backgrounds are valued—not something to set aside in order to succeed academically. Students who once hesitated to pick up a book are now browsing, borrowing, and recommending titles to one another because the barrier of translation has been removed. This increased access helps them rebuild their confidence as readers and re-engage with literacy in ways that feel familiar, joyful, and culturally connected.\r\n\r\nThese Spanish-language YA novels also serve as a bridge to English literacy. When students read stories they understand, they build comprehension skills, narrative awareness, and vocabulary that transfer naturally as they tackle English texts. Many of my ELL students use the Spanish edition as an anchor, allowing them to preview content, clarify plot, or reinforce meaning before or after attempting the English version. This dual-language approach reduces frustration and supports deeper learning across languages.\r\n\r\nPerhaps most importantly, having Spanish YA books visible and accessible fosters a more inclusive classroom community. It opens opportunities for shared discussions, book talks, and reading partnerships that might not have happened otherwise. Students beam with pride when they recognize authors from their own cultures or when a classmate asks about a book they're reading. In these moments, language becomes a tool for connection rather than a barrier. The presence of Spanish YA literature doesn't just support literacy—it strengthens belonging, boosts engagement, and helps every student feel seen.","fullyFundedDate":1670298105326,"projectUrl":"project/high-interest-novels-for-ells/6950211/","projectTitle":"High-Interest Novels for ELLs","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Maner","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8514622_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1660002055490","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/manerclassroom"},{"teacherId":8341734,"projectId":9095280,"letterContent":"My students have benefitted greatly from your contributions. When students lack the necessities such as facial tissue, they tend to not perform well. We have dealt with flu season and now allergy season is upon us. I have seen where my students needed tissue just to get through the day. Also, for the young ladies that I teach, having sanitary pads have been a critical need. Some of my students have to take some hygiene products home, so being able to supply them with that means the world to me and them. Thank you so much for making an impact on my students. With access to multiple copies of the same text, students can now read together in small, focused groups, allowing them to build collaborative discussion skills while practicing comprehension strategies like making inferences, identifying themes, and analyzing character development. These book club texts have enabled me to guide students through rich literary conversations that challenge their thinking, help them connect texts to their own lives, and develop a stronger appreciation for literature. These skills are essential not only for academic growth but also to foster empathy and critical thinking—tools they will use well beyond the classroom.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom has become a lively, communal experience. Instead of silently reading in isolation, students now gather in groups, eagerly discussing plot twists, questioning characters' decisions, and debating possible endings. I've seen students who previously struggled to stay engaged with reading now lead their groups with confidence. One student in particular, who used to shy away from reading aloud, has found her voice through her connection with a strong female character in one of the new books—she now volunteers to read every session. Another student who often has difficulty staying focused is fully immersed during book club time, remembering small details and asking thoughtful questions. These moments would not be possible without your generous donation, and I thank you for helping bring stories, learning, and confidence to life in my classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1744224712628,"projectUrl":"project/book-club-book-options/9243000/","projectTitle":"Book Club Book Options","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Maner","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8514622_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1660002055490","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/manerclassroom"},{"teacherId":9598451,"projectId":8505788,"letterContent":"I cannot express enough gratitude for your generous donation of a printer to our classroom. In today's digital age, technology is essential in education, yet access to printed materials remains just as crucial for student success. This printer allows me to provide my students with high-quality printed resources, from annotated texts to writing exemplars, helping them engage more deeply with the material. While many assignments are digital, there is still great value in physically interacting with text—highlighting key passages, taking margin notes, and revising essays in hand. For students who struggle with screen fatigue or need additional support with reading comprehension, printed resources make a significant difference in their learning experience.\r\n\r\nThe excitement among my students has been incredible. Many of them rely on printed feedback to improve their writing, and now, with quick and easy access to a printer, they can see their revisions come to life instantly. They are particularly enthusiastic about being able to print final drafts of their essays, allowing them to take pride in their polished work before submission. Additionally, students who prefer handwritten brainstorming can now seamlessly integrate their ideas into typed assignments without feeling limited by technology access. Your generosity has removed a barrier, ensuring that all students, regardless of their personal resources, have the tools they need to succeed.
