Having options like floor seating, soft chairs, and movable stools allows students to choose a space where they feel comfortable and ready to learn. When students can move their bodies and settle into a spot that works for them, they are more focused, engaged, and willing to participate in reading and learning activities.\r\n\r\nThe flexible seating has also helped create a more inclusive and welcoming environment. Students feel a sense of ownership over the space, and that choice builds independence and self-awareness. For many students, especially those who struggle with traditional seating, these options support self-regulation and confidence, turning the library into a place where all learners can feel successful and at ease.","fullyFundedDate":1765988032806,"projectUrl":"project/library-flexible-seating/9943275/","projectTitle":"Library Flexible Seating","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. McKelvin","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10353884_orig.jpg?crop=1340,1340,x1048,y181&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1764957659194","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-mckelvin2026"},{"teacherId":10353884,"projectId":9944129,"letterContent":"The addition of puzzles to the library has had a really positive impact on students. A special highlight has been building three terrariums with my 2nd, 4th, and 5th grade classes. Students worked together to layer soil, add seeds, and discuss what living things need to survive. This hands-on project turned the library into an active learning space where science concepts came to life.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the terrarium materials, their reactions were full of excitement. Many were amazed that they were creating a living ecosystem right in front of them. We were able to have thoughtful discussions with questions like, \"Will it make its own water?\" and \"How long will the plants live?\" Watching their faces light up as the terrariums came together was a powerful reminder of how meaningful hands-on STEM experiences can be.\r\n\r\nOver the next few weeks, students will observe the terrariums as they grow and change. They'll make predictions, record observations, and discuss concepts like plant life cycles, ecosystems, and environmental balance. These ongoing observations will help students build critical thinking skills while reinforcing science standards across grade levels. Thanks to our donors, students aren't just learning about science but they're experiencing it in a shared space that encourages curiosity, responsibility, and discovery.","fullyFundedDate":1766498805756,"projectUrl":"project/stem-activities/9944079/","projectTitle":"STEM Activities","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. McKelvin","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10353884_orig.jpg?crop=1340,1340,x1048,y181&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1764957659194","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-mckelvin2026"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_18007","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":237,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":87,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":75.0,"schoolId":18007,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Norwood Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Norwood Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/alabama/birmingham-city-schools/lewis-elementary-school/18007"}
