I asked for items we use every week, specifically watercolor paints and high quality art erasers, as well as specialty items the students less frequently, like acrylic paints, colored Sharpies, print-making ink, and rubber cement. \r\n\r\nI do a lot of teaching through art. In the photos you'll see in my slideshow are images from the history watercolor portraiture unit we did last year, print-making, large acrylilc painting, and collage. I do allow trusted students to use Sharpies when bright saturated color is needed. \r\n\r\nThis instruction is always layered. If we paint our mountain, we are studying our mountain and its moods and features. When we paint portraits, our paintings provide a prompt to write about a significant person from history. We even used watercolor portraiture to make thank you notes to send to a graphic novelist who came to visit our classroom. \r\n\r\nThese materials are higher in quality than typical supplies from the discount stores. That makes a huge difference. It also makes it financially harder for me to supply out of my own pocket. I asked for sets of books that we can read in small groups. These are books specifically chosen for my age group and population. The book I'm going to start with this school year is an oldie but a goodie: From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankwieler, by e.l. konigsburg. This tale is about a brother and sister who run away and make a new home in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. I don't teach anywhere near NYC, so I'll be using the picture book You Can't Take a Balloon Into the Metropolitan Museum, by Jacqueline Preiss Weitzman and Robin Preiss Glasser, to lay foundational knowledge about the museum and highlights of Central Park around the museum.\r\n\r\nThat's a fictional tale, of course, but I also asked for Walden, by Henry David Thoreau. This book is a much higher reading level, so we'll just dip into short passages of it. Henry David Thoreau is one of our and my American heroes and I use Walden to teach a lot of things, including the values of living intentionally and observationally. \r\n\r\nI'm so glad to have these books on my shelf and they will serve many students in years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1744220655534,"projectUrl":"project/help-im-out-of-books/9175429/","projectTitle":"Help! The items I was able to procure with your assistance fall into 2 categories. First is the set of small stuffed animal prizes for students who complete all 26 lessons of our Hands-in Equations pre-algebra curriculum. Each student who completes these lessons becomes a \"Math Mammal\" and gets to take home a new (stuffed) pet. Second are fun kinesthetic and cooperative learning toys like the Teamwork Trekkers, Wobblers, and Double Dutch Jumpropes.\r\n\r\nThe stuffed animals are small, like stocking stuffers, but it's amazing how much added value comes from earning one as a prize. I made a wall display of the stuffed animals with a big announcement about how to earn them. Right away, students started asking me if they could take Hands-on Equations lessons home to get ahead. My student Chris was proud beyond words to be the first to take home a \"Math Lion.\" His friends James, Toby, and Gabriel raced for second. A younger student begged me to save a tiger for him. (Not to worry.
