Students read excerpts, discuss characters and themes, learn new vocabulary, make inferences, summarize, identify perspectives, and practice expressing their thoughts clearly. We also use the stories as a starting point for meaningful conversations about identity, race, culture, friendship, justice, resilience, and inclusion.\r\nThe students are especially excited to read books that feature characters and experiences that feel familiar to them. At the same time, these stories allow students to learn about perspectives different from their own and develop empathy and understanding.\r\nFor my students, representation matters. For many of them, this is the first time they have felt confident and capable while reading.\r\n\r\nI have already seen increased participation, improved comprehension, and greater independence among my students. Instead of feeling frustrated or discouraged, they are more willing to try, ask questions, and stay engaged.
