I have amassed a collection of small toys and objects (called realia) that allow my students to practice isolating sounds based on the name of the objects. Your funds have helped me to organize these objects into small kits the students can use during hands-on warm-up time.\r\n\r\nFor example, one kit helps students to distinguish between middle vowel sounds (see photo). The students have to sort the following objects according to their vowel sound: grass, crab, head, jet, pig, fish, box, rock, brush, and bug. Other storage containers hold objects and word and sentence cards for different letters and sounds to be studied (see photo). \r\n\r\nThe students LOVE using these kits. They see the activities as games and puzzles to be solved and never get tired of practicing. It is also rewarding for them to know when they've mastered a certain kit or box. They know they will move on to the next challenge and meet success.","fullyFundedDate":1771451657278,"projectUrl":"project/organization-for-literacy-instruction/9955923/","projectTitle":"Organization for Literacy Instruction","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Powers","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4361196_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y277&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1767800396312","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4361196"},{"teacherId":4361196,"projectId":9888476,"letterContent":"I am currently funding my way through some dyslexia classes outside of school. The experience has helped me immensely in the classroom as many of the students with whom I work are struggling readers and writers. I have gained not only background knowledge and theory but practical tools to help me to intervene on behalf of my students' in an attempt to give them the foundational literacy skills they need to be successful. \r\n\r\nYour donation helped me to build a small library of books for me and for my students. Several of the books were picture books aimed for younger audiences about students who struggle with reading. When I read these books to the students, I could see the ways in which they related to the characters' struggles. I could also see the empowerment in their reflection of their own strengths. \r\n\r\nI have already read two of the books for me--books aimed toward practitioners, and they have helped as well. I will continue to read through them to add to my knowledge and share with my colleagues. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for your overwhelming generosity and support.","fullyFundedDate":1763676066972,"projectUrl":"project/advocating-for-and-understanding-dyslexi/9888476/","projectTitle":"Advocating for and Understanding Dyslexia in 2025","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Powers","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4361196_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y277&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1767800396312","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4361196"},{"teacherId":10382615,"projectId":9956197,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation, which allowed Safe Harbor to be in the hands of my students. Reading the novel has quickly become a meaningful part of our reading community, and one that we collectively look forward to each day.\r\n\r\nThe book has sparked rich discussions and learning opportunities. As we read, students are learning new vocabulary connected to Indian culture, helping them broaden their understanding of the world. The main character, Geetha, spends much of the story grieving her life in India and reminiscing about the friends, food, and music that remind her of home. This inspired a tasting activity in our classroom, bringing the story to life in a memorable way. The book beautifully connects to students' emotions and highlights the power of music both in Geetha's life and in our own. As part of our reading, we explored music from India, and students shared how music helps them express their thoughts and feelings.\r\n\r\nThe impact of the book has extended beyond the classroom as well. We have had thoughtful conversations about conservation and what it means to be environmental activists. Students were inspired to take action in their community by building two clean-up stations, applying the themes of environmental responsibility. Above all, the book has supported important literacy skills, including understanding figurative language, identifying themes, and analyzing characters in a way that feels meaningful and relevant to students.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generosity and for helping us create such a powerful and enriching learning experience.","fullyFundedDate":1771004734092,"projectUrl":"project/interdisciplinary-learning-through-books/9956197/","projectTitle":"Interdisciplinary Learning Through Books","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Rane-Castrodad","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10382615_orig.png?crop=1052,1052,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1766104242201","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10382615"},{"teacherId":4361196,"projectId":9234136,"letterContent":"For the past few years, I have been working outside of the classroom in a program to study dyslexia in depth. I have purchased many materials that have been necessary to help my students become better readers. Using my own funds is not sustainable, which is why I am so grateful for Donors Choose and donors, like you, who have helped to bring high quality materials into the classroom I share with young learners.\r\n\r\nYour funding enabled me to purchase two sets of decodable readers. These are books for beginning readers and struggling readers that contain words using only the letter-sound relationships (phonetic code) the child has already been taught. Previously, the books I would have given students would have had some words with phonics patterns students had not been taught, and so they would have struggled trying to decode the unfamiliar words. \r\n\r\nThe students I work with have LOVED reading these new books. They are highly motivated to read and figure out the words with the patterns they've learned. This past week, I sat with a student who used to hate to read on his own. He eagerly opened his decodable book and started to read. He patiently sounded out some words and fluently read others. He turned to me at the end and said, \"I love reading now!\"\r\n\r\nThank you so much for this gift and for your generosity.
