Our Library Leaders (students in fourth and fifth grade who use recess time to help in the library) have already taken control of the air plants. Library Leaders come in the library in the morning on Mondays and dunk the air plants in water. Then another group of Library Leaders comes in at recess and takes the air plants out to dry off. Once we talked about how to treat the spinning bookcases (one person at a time and turn the book self slowly) we had a line of students ready to try them out. \r\n\r\nWe put DC comics, Marvel graphic novels, books about Pokemon, Star Wars, Legos, and My Little Pony on one of the spinners. Another shelf has books by Rick Riordan Presents which are longer chapter books about mythologies from all over the world. The final spinners have Branches books by Scholastic which are shorter chapter books and a have colorful pictures. \r\n\r\nWhen many of these books where on the shelfs, we debated getting rid of them due to the infrequent circulation. The cardboard magazine file holders have been a game changer...or will be! The magazine holders have call numbers on them in the everybody section (picture books). I explained to students that the magazines holders are there to help students locate the correct book by using the author's last name. Next month, I'll teach the lesson to all students in grades 2-5 as they also learn about our online catalog and how to find the book in the library. \r\n\r\nThe books about using the library have been wonderful to pull out and share with students as they ask questions or to remind students have expectations. I also take a picture of all new books, create a Google Slideshow, and share it with students and staff so everyone knows what is new. Our previous country books are from 2014 or before. A lot happens to a country in 10 years: presidents, population, and even animals change. One activity I will do it to have students compare the version from 2014 to the version from 2025 and ask students what similarities and differences they find. \r\n\r\nAnother way we'll use the books is from students to plan a vacation. They'll look through the books on different countries and find one they want to visit. Then they'll see how much it costs to fly/drive, convert US dollars to local currency, and the price of hotels. Do you know how I know? The bins (yes plural!) that Diary of a Wimpy Kid live in are empty all of the time. Thanks to you, any book that was damaged from being checked out 30 times in a school year (that's a lot!) was replaced with a fresh copy. Thanks to you, we were able to get multiple copies of the newest releases. Our students are extremely happy.\r\n\r\nJeff Kinney books are perfect for an elementary school library. The older students love the sarcasm and deeper level conversations characters have, some about situations our students relate to. Many students don't like to skip a book in a series so any copy that was lost or damaged meant that the student was frozen and would not finish the series. We organize our chapters book series in bins. The bins for Diary of a Pug and Dragon Masters has been empty since the books arrived!\r\n\r\nMany of the girls already knew and loved Diary of a Pug, but not as many knew about Dragon Masters and the opposite was true of the boys. When the books arrived, I passed out the books so students could browse; this is one of my favorite things to do in the library! There is nothing better than introducing a student to an author, series, or character who is new to them.
