Through your donations, we were able to obtain 3 additional copies of eight books from the Battle of the Books official list for our state. The students in the Battle of the Books club read the books from a selected list and prepare to compete against teams from other schools in our district. In our club, the students read the books independently. Then, we meet weekly as a team to discuss the books and play interactive games to demonstrate our understanding of the books in preparation for the competition questions. The best thing about having all of the extra copies of the books is that multiple students can read the book at the same time and then have conversations with each other to deepen their understanding of the book. In past years, we did not have enough copies of the books and some students had to wait longer for a title they wanted to read, so the extra copies have been a major help this year. Another benefit of the books is that many of them allow students to form deep connections with people or events from their own lives or the world around them. When students can make meaningful connections, they are more invested in reading the entire book and usually understand the book at a higher level as well. Once the Battle of the Books competition is over, the books will be added to the library collection for any third through fifth-grade student to read.
