This project has been such a beacon of joy in our daily life in the classroom these last few months. Each alert that \"Your feeder has a visitor\" is met with the same excitement we felt when the very first bird arrived. \r\n\r\nThanks to this project, we have been able to view and study over 14 different species of birds near our school. We've been able to compare and contrast their appearances and feeding preferences as we've watched them at the feeder during our daily activities. We were amazed to see how many house finches visited our feeder over the course of the last few months. We've marveled at the beauty of the cardinals and purple finches. My students have grown particularly fond of a mourning dove we lovingly call \"Monty\". \r\n\r\nOur learning has extended into all areas of the curriculum. We completed a STEM project where students designed and built their own bird feeders to take home and study birds in their own backyards. We have read countless books about backyard birds so we could learn more about them. We have written Venn Diagrams and observation journals about the birds we have seen. We even graphed their visits to see which birds were most frequently or rarely at the feeder. \r\n\r\nMany of the students in my classroom had never given a second thought to the creatures around them each day. Now daily at recess one of them will run up to me telling me about a bird they saw, often identifying it completely on their own. One student in particularly gives a regular report of the birds he is now observing at his own backyard feeder. I am so grateful that their learning and excitement for this project has them seeing the world around them with fresh eyes. \r\n\r\nI am so grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my students. Thank you so much for your generosity in making this experience possible for my class.","fullyFundedDate":1739225889116,"projectUrl":"project/window-into-the-wildlife-around-us/9101837/","projectTitle":"Window Into the Wildlife Around Us","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Shannon","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9917943_orig.png?crop=1034,1034,x0,y24&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1738865511428","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9917943"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_58820","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":783,"numTeachers":57,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":96,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"13.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":74.6,"schoolId":58820,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Williamsburg City School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Williamsburg City School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/kentucky/williamsburg-independent-school-district/williamsburg-city-school/58820"}
