We made a model of the rock cycle using star bursts, and as you can see in the photos, the microwave helped us to turn the \"rocks\" into igneous rocks. The refrigerator was also really helpful recently, since we had a big ice cream party to celebrate learning our multiplication facts. I was able to keep the whipped cream and some of the ice cream cold until it was time to celebrate! \r\n\r\nWithout your generosity, we would not have been able to do the rock activity and the ice cream party would have been a real logistical challenge. This year's selections include spooky mysteries, fast-paced adventures, graphic novels, and quirky comedies—books that not only capture students' attention, but also help us introduce key reading skills. With these engaging texts, students practice making predictions, identifying themes, and navigating text features. Because SSYRA offers such a wide range of genres and reading levels, every child can find a book that feels \"just right,\" empowering them to grow as confident, capable readers.\r\nIn our library, reading is an active, collaborative experience. Students participate in independent reading, small-group discussions, and whole-class read-alouds where they share thoughts and build comprehension together. \r\nWe are already seeing wonderful moments of connection. One student who typically prefers video games has become captivated by the new graphic novels. Another student—shy during most class activities—was able to share with everyone how much she enjoyed a spooky mystery from this year's list. This is the first time I have tried to do a Donor's Choose project and it has been a great experience. I really did not know that I would get this kind of support so quickly. I'm truly grateful for people who are able and willing to reach out and help teachers! \r\nThe dry erase markers are a very popular item so students can keep creating with a little bit more of a carefree approach at the end of class time. They love sitting on the carpet together and having drawing contests and practicing things they have learned during art. It has led to lots of laughter and extra art practice while being completely student driven. \r\nWith a few classes that have begun working on their sewing project I have seen such a revived engagement and excitement to try something new. Students have learned to work through struggles, overcome some frustrations, and have come out very proud and excited about what they are designing. \r\nIt is very exciting for me to be able to teach them a skill that may be under used, but can be beneficial to them in the future and also be fun for them in class. Art offers the kids a space to work and create without always being so concerned about something being correct. It gives them time to be abstract and just experiment with ideas.\r\nI can't wait to continue these sewing projects throughout the year with more classes and more grade levels. I think these 5th grade felt pizza slices and 4th grade cactus plants will be a huge hit and one I will continue with for years to come. I have had just as much fun as they have discussing and planning their projects. \r\nFrom new crayons, tape, staples, glue and more, we use tons of different items in the at room. Different projects and materials speak differently to different children.
