A student before him got a cowboy cash. He chose a watch and so the next time the little boy went to find one like his friend but we were all out. Until this project came along there were more watches and the next time the boy earned a cash he was finally able to match his friend. For example, Barbie needs to get to her own talent show but the school does not have a ramp for the stage. After reading Pedro Perfecto, arquitecto (Iggy Peck the Architect), my students were tasked with designed a bridge to help the students in the book make it back across. Another activity where my engineers had to really think through, is when they had to design the perfect trap for a leprechaun. It was interesting to see different designs from students. Some thoughtful ones who incorporated things like a toilet or intelligently thought through having a security camera to enhance their traps. These traps were built out of legos and students let their imaginations shine. My little scientests also were reminded about being kind and showing love to one another. After reading the book Love The Very Hungry Caterpillar (Amor de la orgua muy hambrienta), my students made a paper caterpillar and used water to make him grow. \r\nIn my classroom, we always start off on the carpet. Students are always eager to learn and listen to the story. They are always captivated by my decent character voices and ready to try to tackle a problem presented through the engineering design process. After reading, Gustavo The Shy Ghost we saw the types of simple machines. The problem was that Gustavo had more ghost that needed to get to the graveyard. They had to decide which simple machine can pull the ghost up to the graveyard. We then focused on a pully and parts of a pulley. They were tasked with designing something to hold their load (ghosts) so that they could make their way up to the graveyard. It was fun to see their unique ideas come to life and all the different approaches to make it happen. My kindergarteners and first graders learned the word camouflaged and we talked about helping Gustavo the ghost hide in different environments. \r\nAll our stories start on the carpet, we make connections with the text and then students are presented with a problem to solve. All my students enjoy the books and it is so beneficial to have them in both English and Spanish. The months keep passing and sometimes its good to remind students what they could earn if they remain following the rules. We will continue to encourage our students to follow the rules and our staff is great about rewarding them when they do.
